    1. Thanks! DIL (the witch with the house) made both witch costumes, as well as for the Flying Monkey (PhD*Son), Dorothy and Glinda (their daughters), and the Emerald City/Yellow Brick Road (her Mom). Daughter made her own Tornado costume. The rest of us bought ours.

  2. Puddle-- thanks for the Digby link; it is both level-headed and reassuring. I would make one emendation: "The case could cost the family $250 million" should read "The case should cost the family more than $250 million." The 250 megabucks is, as I understand, just a formal minimum bid for procedural purposes.

Jurors in Trump Defamation Trial to Go Unnamed For Their Own Protection
November 3, 2023 By Taegan Goddard
“A federal judge in Manhattan ruled Friday that the jury in E.Jean Carroll’s forthcoming defamation trial against Donald Trump will be kept anonymous for the jurors’ own protection, citing the potential for harassment by the former president’s supporters,” the New York Times reports.

Republicans Threaten To Filibuster Subpoena Enforcement And Quash SCOTUS Oversight [Click] “It also layers even more importance onto the banner 2024 election. Should Democrats win back the House then, they could do real Supreme Court oversight, unencumbered by either the filibuster or by institutionalist Senate leadership some Democrats and advocates have quietly grumbled are too meek to meet the moment.”

    1. From the (ad)Advocacy newsleter:

Israel admits airstrike on ambulance near hospital that witnesses say killed and wounded dozens
At least 15 people were killed and 50 more wounded in an airstrike on an ambulance convoy outside of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The IDF claims that the ambulances were being "used by terrorists" but offered no evidence to support this. “The images of bodies strewn on the street outside the hospital are harrowing,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, reiterating his call for a ceasefire. This is becoming personal for Guterres as Israelis have killed 72 UN aid workers and injured 23 others — more deaths to aid workers than in any conflict in a comparable time period. This, along with the killing of 3,700 children and 36 journalists, has left even many vocal Zionists wondering how this can be justified as Israel defending itself.

  6. Federal judge deems Trump a legal menace, protects jury in current E. Jean Carrol case. [Click] A remarkable order; it wouldn't be surprising in a Murder Inc. type of trial, but in a civil case, where the defendant has already been found guilty? Wow.
