All Souls Night

A song from the point of view of the dead - who return at this time of year,
when the veil between worlds is thin - to dance with the living

lyrics

Long ago we walked these roads
That today you boldly tread
We tilled the fields and we built the homes
Where now you dwell instead

We broke our hearts on Time's harsh wheel
We laughed, we loved, we lost
We saw the sun both rise and set
And for that glory paid the cost

So let your voices sing and your drumbeat sound
Let the sacred fire burn bright
For the dead will dance with the living
All on this All Soul's Night

Remember, oh remember, at this turning of the year
Our faces long forgotten. Speak our names and draw us near.
Remember, oh remember, so that we may know again
The sound of living voices and the warmth of living kin

So let your voices sing and your heartbeat sound
Let the sacred fire burn bright
For the dead will dance with the living
All on this All Soul's Night

  1. In my family, the first costume, for about five years old, was an orange silk outfit, hand made in China, delivered by my gandmother's cousin who was a missionary,in China passed down to her children, and children's children. Came with a braided que, made of horse hair, inserted in the top of a lady's stocking. Mother later mom made a purple and lavender on for a larger child, (six or eight). And a hand-painted skeleton, bones painted with silver paint on black fabric.

My additions were a bear and a zebra. Neither of my kids ever had a store-bought costume.

    1. A nice story. We lived outside of town; as memory serves me, I went trick or treating once, and did not have a costume.

    2. Costumes weren't a thing when/where I grew up. The Halloween tradition was soaping store windows. I don't recall Marcus ever having a costume or actually trick-or-tretaing, but that was 40-some years ago.

Gee— not a nice news selection this morning; I will try to do better.

    1. Come to think of it, Al Capone thought that if he paid the taxes which had defrauded the IRS of, all would be OK, but that was treated as an admission and punched his ticket to federal prison.

    2. Santos is the one person I think should be expelled from Congress. Leaving aside the due process arguement (which should be resolved in a couple of weeks), this has nothing to do with his political opinions. It's a matter of criminal behavior that seriously tainted his election. He should never have been in Congress to begin with.
