We went to the head store and I got a new head!

I kid you not!  A few weeks ago, we went to West Marine and bought a marine toilet (aka "head") and installed it in our boat, because the old one apparently had leaked antifreeze as bright pink as Pepto Bismol. We couldn't get it off and didn't trust it not to leak again.

  1. Wil, along with Eldest and Root*Center*Son made it across Lake Champlain, despite winds gusting to near 30mph for much of the journey. Photos tomorrow. It was impressive! The day ended very nice indeed, as our Bay is well protected.

  2. Although I arrived in North America four times by sea, anything smaller than a freighter leaves me sick to the gills. I do love being on the water. So, take a couple of trips for me.

    1. Will do. I love being ON the boat. And I did well motoring the inflatable dinghy out to the boat once they arrived, but I am still not a fan of stepping from one boat to the other. You know...it's just all that room for error. As they say in London: Mind the Gap!

  3. Here’s an article from EducationWeek about the PCB contamination problem at Burlington HS and other schools. [Click] I hadn’t realized how widely they were used— I knew of PCB’s being used in heavy duty transformers.

    1. Yes. They've been testing all the schools in Vermont that they're unsure of.

I left a note about this on the last thread, too.

  4. Looking for an opportunity to make a joke about necessaries on boats, I looked up information about the heads on Nelson's flagship, the Victory. Not surprisingly, there were three or four different kinds, depending upon rank. But in the process I saw some photos of the ship itself from dockside; THAT THING IS HUGE!

    1. Come to think of it, there was presumably no problem with antifreeze in the heads of the Victory.

    2. More likely a problem with Freeze, especially when rounding Cape Horn.
Like, don't be using the outhouse style privy when the boat gets hit by a big wave.
      (People actually died that way.)

    1. 😁

That's a family joke here. You go to the shoe store for new shoes, and while walking in a mall we saw a display of stockings, which Wil immediately dubbed "the Leg store." So when our child stubbed their toe, Wil offered to take them to the foot store for a new foot. It kind of mushroomed from there.

  6. Speaking of mushrooms, partisan attacks seem to be happening all across Russia. If I understand correctly, this reports the eighth recent sabotage attack on the Circum-Baikal Railway (first minute of video). [Click] The Circum-Baikal Railway is that part of the Trans-Siberian Railway that goes around the south end of Lake Baikal, and connects European Russia and western Siberia to Vladivostok, Ulan Bator, and Beijing. 1. I can't locate it now, but not long ago I saw a web page with the distribution of native speakers of non-Russian languages across the Russian Federation. Native Ukrainian speakers and Tatar speakers are numerous and spread across a huge part of the federation; might stories handed down through their families of their forcible relocation from Ukraine and associated Soviet atrocities be strong enough to encourage significant partisan activities? Could be. And there are numerous restive "republics" that have their own parliaments and administrations that theoretically have the right under Federation law to independence.

  7. Speaking of Cape Horn, my great grandfather got to California that way. There is an unverifiable story that he managed to escape Schleswig-Holstein (and conscription) after it was seized by the Prussians by obtaining seaman's papers under a false name and signing onto a British ship headed for San Francisco. We have a craft item he made on the way--a polished half coconut shell on three ivory (probably from sperm whale teeth) feet. Also a typical large decorative mug given to him by the captain for his aid in quieting a mutiny.
