    1. It suuuure was! The wind gusts were close to 30mph! You should see the video I took of them going uuuppp and down, uuuppp and down. In one photo the motor is completely submerged.
      They elected to motor across the broad part of the Lake and only put up the sails after they were inside the Outer Bay. Good thing too, as the former owner had left the Jib sail's rope tied on very strangely, and the Mainsail was a type they'd never encountered and they had to sort out how to raise it while under duress. But they did! So, all in all, a great experience, because they got some stories to tell into the bargain.

    How does this fit with the theory that Easter island was originally settled by South Americans with a later influx of Polynesians? My vague memory is that the well-documented Polynesian influx was about 400 years ago.
    =====================
    Matters are greatly confused because the Polynesian inhabitants of Easter Island, as well as their culture, were very nearly exterminated by Spanish/Chilean invaders in historic times. But evidently the Polynesians came first, and Easter Island was the last and most remote Polynesian settlement.

  3. Rescuers search for four-year-old brother of girl found dead in California river [Click] “The children, who were not wearing life jackets, entered the water with their mother and another adult while trying to make their way to climb on a specific rock, authorities said. The river was off limits because of high water levels.”

    Such foolish things frequently happen when the weather improves and the river rises, but it is still mind boggling. The stories don’t say where the families are from, but they could well be local.

    1. Minimum fine for getting into the river $225; endangering children costs more. [Click] TV videos show how fast the river is flowing; entering it would be flat-out insane--- or heroic for rescuers.

    2. How utterly tragic! Either the adults involved were high or they were murderous. Those poor children.

    3. The adults were more likely just stupid. Recreational drownings happen on that river most years.

  4. I've been far too busy to keep up with the news this past week or two. But I have tried to keep up with the news about the Debt Ceiling debacle. Heather Cox Richardson helps. I really don't see how this will play out.

    1. Janet Yellen seems to object to the trillion dollar coin because it hasn't been done before. But that argument does not apply to consolidated debt bonds (AKA "consols" or "perpetual bonds"), which both the UK and the US have used in times past. I do believe the Administration can do both of those things by itself. As for the coin, it would take several days to mint and several more to get it (them?) deposited into a federal reserve bank. How long it would take to issue consols I have no idea. Either one would be a good smash-mouth response to the GOP's game of chicken. IMO.

    2. My guess is that at the end the GOP will agree to a compromise that gives them just enough they can claim victory, even though it's a tiny fraction of what they originally sought. But that's a guess. If the GOP decides it would rather look stupid than weak, consols may be the way to go.

  6. puddle~~

    Docs coming this morning (10:30) To see if my potassium has improved. Looking for potassium supplements on the web is hair raising, so lots of avocados, broccoli, bananas, cabbage. . . . if you feel like offering prayers or good wishes, I love you. xox

    1. I sure hope it is OK, puddle, or at least minor; the great majority of the potassium in the body is in the tissues, so by the time the blood level gets seriously low the total deficiency is considerable, and response to supplements is slow. If low, I hope oral medication does the job. Some blood pressure medicines cause loss of potassium, so adjustment there could be in order. Fingers crossed. Are you feeling really tired?
