🌀 It's New Year's Eve! 🌀 GoodBye 2022! 🌀

No Worries, that's a bonfire, not a barn fire (at Eldest's house).

    2. I was surprised he was a student at Washington State University, not the University of Idaho. Although the two campuses are only 10 miles apart. It's not currently clear if he knew the victims.

  2. Happy New Year, All. Here's hoping for more of what you want in 2023 and less of what you don't want.

    3. A quorum being present, the motion is carried unanimously.

  3. I commend to you, as worthy to be watched on New Year's Eve, the final episode of Season 2 of All Creatures Great and Small...especially to hear a proper reading of Auld Lang Syne in a proper Scottish voice. Don't worry if you haven't watched the series from the start. There's enough to comprehend it. And after you've watched it from the start, it will be twice as beautiful. Season 3 begins January 9th.

  4. I'll ask this question here because I don't know where else to ask it: What effect does Sinema's decision to register as an independent have on the Arizona ballot? Can she still run in the Democratic primary? Or does there have to be a Democratic primary to select an opponent? (Voters in Illinois don't register by party, so I have no idea how this works.)

    1. The parties are sort of extra-legal entities which have no official role in elections but have persuaded states to run primaries for them. In Georgia there are about eight parties enumerated on the SoS website, but only the Libertarians have fielded candidates for most statewide positions. There are also independent candidates on the ballot. I do not know what they have to do to qualify. Pennsylvania had three independents on the ballot in addition to Oz and Fetterman. New Hampshire often has a dozen or more candidates in the presidential primary, which is scheduled separately from the primary for other positions.
Georgia lets voters vote in any primary. In 2022 lots of Democrats voted Republican in the primary to support Raffensperger. The pollsters were upset by the "ticket splitting" in the general. Voters are getting more savy.

    2. In Vermont we do not register by party, we just register as residents eligible to vote. In the Primary we choose which ballot we want to vote on. In the Election, all the candidates are on the ballot. To get onto a ballot a person must acquire enough signatures of voters who are willing that they be on the ballot, and turn it in by a certain date.. That's all that's required. When it comes to the debates, any serious candidates are included, no matter what party they may or may not be affiliated with.

    3. Yes, Illinois does things the same way as Vermont. But my questions was specifically about Airizona, which it seems does things differently.

    4. Bill, you may get some general answers at Arizona's state web site.

    5. I see, Bill. There is no state-recognised Independent Party in Arizona.

  5. Does anyone have any idea how to find the nominees for a particular Billboard award for a particular year? *NOT* the winners. I can get the winners. Even when I specifically include 'nominees' in the search terms, I get the winners!

What I want, specifically, is the nominees or finalists or whatever the bloody hell they are for the Billboard World No. 1 single in 1990. The winner was Sinead O'Connor. What I'd like to find out is, who was her competition? And no matter how I phrase my search, the only thing that comes up is Sinead O'Connor!
I'm going to bang my head against the wall! What's so difficult about my request? What's so weird about wanting to know who the winner was up against that year? AAARRRGGG!!!

    3. CAT! I found on YouTube the entire show of the 1990 Billboard Music Awards. The award you're wondering about is near the end, and announced by Joni Mitchell. Unlike the Oscars, etc., I don't hear any nominees mentioned. My impression is that the Billboards people just chose one person and that was that. But you can check that out for yourself here:
