Well, there’s the Socialist Rifle Association [Click] Their Wikipedia article has links to the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, the Liberal Gun Club, Redneck Revolt, and the Pink Pistols. And at the outbreak of the war, the government of Ukraine published a booklet on how to be a partisan, which I am prett sure is available online in English.
I am reminded of the observation that while Russians were looking up flights out of the country on the Internet, Ukrainians were looking up how to make Molotov cocktails.
25% of the electorate identifies as Republican; 25% as Democratic, The rest are Independent, unpredictable. Neither the pollsters, the prss or the politicos want to talk about that. What I know is that voters are jealous of the secrecy of the ballot and resent any suggestion that people know how they voted. Republicans in Georgia apparently tracked what ballot people took in the primary and are trying to do follow up polling on that basis. I just ignore the queries.
I have to say I'm finding all the warnings about violence on Election Day, toward officials and poll workers, rather unsettling. So, I just sent this to my (wonderful) Town Clerk:
As you know, I am available to volunteer on Election Day and, just like last time, am willing to help with whatever you need, whenever you need me. Best hours are between 10am and 7pm, but I am open to other times as well.
There is just one caveat. At the request of my family, I need to say that, should someone arrive at the polls with a gun or be otherwise posing a threat, I would need to leave the building. I assume I would need to sign out in some way. What do you recommend?
This is [our good town], and we are likely to have no issues whatsoever. But these are strange times we are in, and given the declaration of possible threats, I need to reassure my family that I will be careful indeed.
Youngest (and Fam) got a long-awaited new vehicle on Monday. They needed something large enough for 3 kids and transporting large artwork. 2022 Hyundai Palisade
Daughter got her long-awaited new vehicle on Thursday. Honda CRV Hybrid
We now have three Hybrids in the family...two in Maine, plus our Maverick.
I remember when we got our hybrid Toyota Camry it was a no-brainer; the premium over a straight conventional engine was trivial (it didn't start out that way).
For me the price needs to come down AND the vehicle needs to be able to work well even when it's -25ºF. I haven't heard of an all-electric vehicle that I can drive in January.
Out of Eurasia Hypothesis [Click] An interesting new alternative to the Out of Africa Hypothesis of human evolution. First Homo erectus out of Africa, followed by evolution in Asia (probably South Asia), followed by radiation to the rest of the world. Homo sapiens erectus, Homo sapiens sapiens, Homo sapiens neanderthalis, and Homo sapiens denisovis were subspecies (which fits the old definition of a species as a group capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring.
I'm having to learn a new way of typing that doesn't use my left thumb. When we put all new rails in our 110' split rail fence, I carried the rails in a poor position...with my wrist cupped, and now I have an issue at the base of my thumb and upper wrist. I've tried a few things, like an ACE bandage, but I think I'm going to need a brace for a few weeks...with intermittant gentle exercises.
That sounds like the repetitive stress injuries in my hands. Try stretching them by interlacing the fingers (as in prayer), turning the palms up and extending them as far overhead as they will go (within reason). Also apply old fashioned methyl salicylate/menthol/camphor liniment. Look for the house brand (less expensive), but get the strongest they have (30% methyl salicylate). Stay away from anything with capsacin in it. If using it shortly before going to bed, pull on a pair of simple cotton work gloves, maybe with the tips of the index finger and thumb cut off to facilitate typing, to keep from accidentally touching near your eyes while sleeping. My two cents' worth.
📬 Whipping up supporters against a perceived enemy to create a statistical probability of an attack without advocating a specific event is known as “stochastic terrorism.” ~ Heather Cox Richardson
I am reminded of a fellow who attended a speech by A. Hitler during his early appearances. He reported back to a US diplomat that the fellow was a very good public speaker, but wasn't dangerous. The diplomat responded that there is no such thing as a very good public speaker who isn't dangerous.

DeleteHoward was on CNN last night and was asked what he thinks the Dems' election chances are. He said he's optimistic.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see.
I do hope that the surge in early voting bodes better than expected for any Non-Republican. It's going to be a nail biter.

I've been an Independent ever since the Democrats showed us in Iowa 2004 how ready they are to eat their own. But no worries about how I'm voting!
