  1. Couple notes on the last thread.

This week has been kind of packed...
Made soup for my 90 yo neighbor who has Covid (just left it hanging on her doorknob then texted her that it was there), Released three more Monarch Butterflies and fed two Black Swallowtail caterpillars (one now in chrysalis mode and one just about to do that deed), have to take both kitties to the vet today (Friday) for rabies shots, though I doubt Spinnaker can have it yet, as she's been throwing up and hasn't been "right" since she had the antibiotic for a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). So I think we'll be doing a bland diet for her for a few days (and hoping it's not something more serious)!

And, on top of that, I went to the doctor Thursday myself. Which brings me to a really odd question. You see, Wil had a UTI a couple weeks ago. Spinnaker kitty got one a half week later. Now I have one. None of us has had anything like that in years and years. So what on Earth could be the connection? Is it a crazy coincidence? Or is there some germ we've all somehow come in contact with somewhere? It's strange because we have yet to be able to name anything that would cause it. Kitty obviously doesn't use the same facilities we do, and I'm the only one who changes the cat box. So...it's a pretty silly mystery!

Anyway. Stuff has been going on, and I haven't been able to pop by as much as I'd like.

  2. Apparently, bacteria from the anus can get on the hand and get transmitted to the urethra. Given the large amount of illustrative material, it is a very common problem. The only one I know who ever had a UTI was my aged mother who had no close physical contact with anyone. Frequent hand washing would seem to be the best advice.

    1. We know how it can happen....but for Wil it has never happened before and for me it's been since the time I had a colonoscopy and got a UTI 4-5 days later. The doctor admitted it probably happened during the procedure. But why both of us AND our cat (one cat and not the other) all within a few weeks is still a mystery.

    2. Yes. It almost surely spread from one to the other, but I have no clue to offer as to how it might have spread. Or how Wil got it in the first place.

    1. Welcome home, Alan!

We're home too, from the vet's office. Spinnaker is improving, Mizzen is in fine health, and both were able to get their rabies shots. It helps!

  6. I can't seem to find out by googling. Has anyone here heard whether the new Covid booster shot will actually keep us from getting Covid or only (once again) make it less likely to be a bad case?

    1. Since there have been no clinical trials, there is no way to know. The assumption would be that it will be like the previous vaccine: somewhat reducing the chance of infection and greatly reducing the chance of a bad case.

    2. I see. We won't get past this until it can be quelled more the way the flu is. I think this is a step in that direction, though, since it's more targeted than past doses. 🤞

    3. Flu hasn't been quelled. Every year a number of people get flu and the number of deaths isn't totally insignificant. I haven't compared the numbers, but I suspect Covid-19 and flue are now pretty comparable.

  7. From Heather Cox Richardson...

First, after a day of Republican congress members railing against yesterday’s educational loan forgiveness of up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients and $10,000 for others, the White House tweeted a thread of those members alongside the amount of Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) money those individuals were forgiven.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said: “For our government just to say ok your debt is completely forgiven.. it’s completely unfair.” Greene had $183,504 in PPP loans forgiven.

Representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL) said: “Biden’s reckless, unilateral student loan giveaway is unfair to the 87 percent of Americans without student loan debt and those who played by the rules.” Buchanan had more than $2.3 million in PPP loans forgiven.

Representative Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) said: “We do not need farmers and ranchers, small business owners, and teachers in Oklahoma paying the debts of Ivy League lawyers and doctors across the U.S.” Mullin had more than $1.4 million in PPP loans forgiven.

Representative Kevin Hern (R-OK) said: “To recap, in the last two weeks, the ‘Party of the People’ has supercharged the IRS
to go after working-class Americans, raised their taxes, and forced them to pay for other people's college degrees.” Hern had more than $1 million in PPP loans forgiven.

Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA) said: “Asking plumbers and carpenters to pay off the loans of Wall Street advisors and lawyers isn’t just unfair. It’s also bad policy.” Kelly had $987,237 in PPP loans forgiven.

Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said: Everyone knows that in a $60 Billion+ European land war, it's always the last $3 Billion that kicks in the door….” Gaetz had $482,321 in PPP loans forgiven.

Then Biden gave a barn-burning speech to the Democratic National Committee in Rockville, Maryland, clearly dividing the Republican Party between the MAGAs and mainstream Republicans. The MAGA philosophy is “semi-fascism,” he said, and we are seeing either its beginning or death knell.

“I want to be crystal clear about what’s on the ballot this year. Your right to choose is on the ballot this year. The Social Security you paid for from the time you had a job is on the ballot. The safety of our kids from gun violence is on the ballot…. The very survival of our planet is on the ballot. Your right to vote is on the ballot. Even…democracy.”

“The MAGA Republicans don’t just threaten our personal rights and economic security,” he said. “They’re a threat to our very democracy. They refuse to accept the will of the people. They embrace…political violence. They don’t believe in democracy.”

“This is why in this moment, those of you who love this country—Democrats, Independents, mainstream Republicans—we must be stronger,” he said.
