    1. I remember there used to be a huge fireworks show at the Santa Cruz boardwalk for Labor Day; but it was cancelled after the crowds that came from the SF Bay Area simply became too big and too rowdy. The city council decided to cancel it before something really bad happened. The other most memorable show I remember was at Kurihama in Japan, where the first US consulate was established-- bigger than Santa Cruz. The crowd was dangerously big; when leaving I lifted Naomi up onto my shoulders for fear that she might be trampled if the crowd were to panic. Some years later there was another big fireworks show in the Tokyo area where exactly that sort of thing did happen, and a number of people died.

  2. How a Vermont company will keep the Statue of Liberty standing tall

Barre, VT stonemasons are famous. Some of the stone carvings in graveyards here are true works of art.

    2. I dare say that it is probably the first time they ever helped to rebuild a star fortress--which is what the base of the statue is. Also interesting to me to hear that "Barre" is pronounced "berry." I had assumed it was pronounced "bar."

    3. I just thought to look up the pronunciation of "Barre" in my gazeteer, and they say the "a" is pronounced as in "cat." Guess I misheard.

Yes, Barre is two-syllables, pronounced with Ba as in ‘bad’ and rre as in ‘reel.”
