I can't help but think of how Al Gore was too quick to concede Florida. And yesterday there was a report of an election (state senate somewhere, I think) that was won by a single vote. And let's hope Fetterman takes better care of himself--his medical problems are significant, but manageable. --Alan
There were a bunch of mistakes in Florida in 2000, beginning with the Democratic party having mostly ceded the state to migrants from yhe mid-West. In 1992, the closest Clinton/Gore came was Valdosta, Ga. Then there were the hanging chads in Duval County, as well as the long-standing practice of not even opening absentee ballots unless they were sufficiently numerous to exceed the difference between leading candidates. Also, there was no federal requirement that ballots mailed from overseas would count as long as they were post-marked by election day. That required a change in federal law. Also, the Gore people suggested a partial recount, which violated the equal protection clause and then overlooked that the Florida Supreme Court was in the habit of issuing advisory opinions, which coukd then be appealed. From where sat, Gore tapping Lieberman was the death knell. Imagine an adult person wanting to censor the music to which young people could listen After the debacle in Iraq got underway, there were people in the military who argued that the invasion plans were on the shelf because, after Clinton withdrew from Somalia, the Pentagon was looking for military bases in Iraq from which it could "stabilize" the lands around the Indian Ocean. Remember Rumsfeld coming up with the Lily pad alternative of using aircraft carriers in the Indian Ocean from which to launch patrols? That did not go ver well with the aircorce because they really like to relax on the golf course. I'll have to check how many bases we still have in Iraq. You'll recall that Saddam agreed to U.S. bases just before the invasion began, but it was too late. So, the first thing the air force attacked was water well in Anbar which they mistook for an industrial plant and irked a whole lot of herders whose sheep (one million) were now out of water. And so it went. How would grand standing lazy Al have fared?

In the PA Senate Republican primary, Oz won out over McCormick, by less than 1000 votes.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope that bodes better for Democrat Fetterman!

That was already yhe case before the invasion. Eight years of skirmishes had turned people off.
