"U.S. news organizations have failed to communicate to readers that we are on a knife edge between democracy and authoritarianism." Heather Cox Richardson on the hearings
The press has a long-standing vested interest in maintaining the two-party model because that secures their revenue stream. They deny that there is collusion between the news and advertising departments, but a candidate without a significant advertising budget gets ignored. Here in Georgia there are going to be five candidates for the Governor position in November. The press, even public radio, is ignoring all but the "major" two. Fact is that DJT was dissed by 2000 voters who failed to vote for President and 38,000 voted for the Libertarian. That voters are deciding elections is not welcome news to all those people newly described as "influencers."
I disagree about the "kinfe edge." The pseudoinsurrection not only failed, it was bound to fail. Hitler's inept beer hall putsch looks plausible by contrast.
My point is that the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys simply did not understand American institutions. If they had succeeded in seizing and holding the Capitol building for days or weeks, it would have changed nothing. Nor was there ever any chance that Trump's lawsuits and pleas to officials would have any effect.
Yeah, so they’re learning. Now they’re trying a more methodical and deliberate method of stealing the election through getting their people into place to lie and gerrymander and throw out votes and get their candidate into office even though it be against the will of the people.

Could somebody PLEASE get Louis DeJoy out! Since he got his claws into the USPS I've paid all my bills the day after they come in the mail. Yesterday I got a SHUT OFF NOTICE (big red letters) for water. I know I never got that bill or it would have been paid. I did send the check today but I *really* hate Louis DeJoy. The day he announced he would be raising the price on postage stamps I went to the Post Office and bought three rolls of Forever stamps.
A week ago I mailed to my dearest friend a birthday gift that I ordered 'specially made for her. It was supposed to arrive on Monday. It's still not there. And all the USPO could tell me today is that it's still at our regional distribution site in southern NH. Apparently they don't have enough workers to sort the mail in a timely way. Gee, think maybe they shouldn't have closed the one Vermont distribution site we used to have?
I set aside my copy of The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity by David Graeber and David Wengrow because I had worked my way into the conclusion and it was getting rather overwhelming. Today I finished it, and I shall transcribe a bit:
”We began this book with a quote which refers to the Greek notion of Kairos as one of those occasional moments in a society’s history when its frames of reference undergo a shift— a metamorphosis of the fundamental principles and symbols, when the lines between myth and history, science and magic become blurred— and, therefore, real change is possible. Philosophers sometimes like to speak of ‘the Event’ — a political revolution, a scientific discovery, an artistic masterpiece — that is, a breakthrough which reveals aspects of reality that had previously been unimaginable but, once seen, can never be unseen. If so, kairos is the kind of time in which Events are prone to happen.
Societies around the world appear to be cascading towards such a point. This is particularly true of those which, since the First World War, have been in the habit of calling themselves ‘Western.’
. . .Max Planck once remarked that new scientific truths don’t replace old ones by convincing established scientists that they were wrong; they do so because proponents of the older theory eventually die, and generations that follow find the new truths to be familiar, obvious even. . .”
Putting this together with George Friedman’s theory in “The Storm Before the Calm” that the two great cycles of US history, the 80-year “institutional cycle” and the 50-year “socio-economic cycle,” converge during this decade, points toward an exciting ride indeed, but with the definite possibility of a safe landing. I sure hope so. . .
I have followed the happenings and investigation from the start. Watching the video tonight, I feel such anger toward the insurrectionists and the seditious former president. I feel they should be cast out of citizenship. I don't know why DT isn't being arrested and placed in jail. I hope the Justice Department acts swiftly.
Maybe they could make a point of not keeping a close eye on the former guy after he is ensconced at Fort Jefferson; after all, it's only about a hundred miles from Havana--he could zip over there and request political asylum. Just sayin'.
Rather's reference to de Toucqueville's designation of America as female is interesting because not noticed. That the feminine principle continues to be contested is simply not obvious. Does it need to be obvious for the principle to succeed or can it be a stealth victory? Are women supposed to be intimidated by the attacks on children? Children are always attacked by predatory males. Whether they are juveniles or young adults does not make much difference. Only, less effort is wasted when they are younger. Now that reproduction is effectively rationed, the question is whether males will object to the waste. Do all lives matter enough for the killing to be stopped?

That they are trying things doesn't mean they will succeed. And when you talk about gerrymandering, remember that I live in Illinois.
DeleteAnd on another topic, it has been more than 20 years since I watched a single minute of TV.

Wow!! I’be been saying this for years!!! I have long held that what kept me going with home schooling was that I never had to get up before 8am!
