Dopplar Radar showing possible Tornado

You may already know how to spot a tornado on Dopplar Radar, but I have seldom seen such a clear picture of it.  When you see both green and red right next to each other, you are seeing both cool air and warm air in juxtaposition that inspires rotation.  In this case, there was warm moist air (the worst kind for this) and we were watching it closely because my brother and family were in Dennisport, with the storm moving toward the west.  But just at this point the storm moved more to the NW, missing Dennisport! Whew!  Especially as it was around 3:00am and they were in a small beach cottage with no basement. I have to wonder how others fared.

  1. No need for such knowledge out here; rather amazing that you have direct access to the data.

    1. It's pretty easy to access the data if you have some good links. Such as:

The “spaghetti model” tracks are a bit concerning, so I'm keeping an eye on Hurricane Larry. Already a Category 3, and increasing, it’s one powerful storm. There's a real chance it will slam into Newfoundland, where friends of mine live. Newfoundland had terrible devastation from Hurricane Igor in 2011.

      Helpful links for tracking storms:

(On this site, choose the most recent article related to storms. Then scroll to the very bottom of the page and a little past that to the Comments section. There you can find real-time information and can even ask questions, which are often quickly responded to.)

I have been interested in weather for a long time, and maintain a small, Northeast weather blog.

  2. On the last thread, Alan posted a great article

"Lyft, Uber to cover fees for drivers sued under Texas law"

telling how Lyft and Uber are covering legal fees for drivers who drive women out of Texas for abortions. They have also made a huge donation to Planned Parenthood.

This reminds me of that country song from the early 90's called Independence Day (written by Gretchen Peters and sung by Martina McBride). It's a song about domestic violence. But the funny part is that some notable conservatives apparently only ever listened to the chorus and thought it was about the 4th of July and was all about Hooray USA. Seriously, if one listens to the lyrics, it's about an 8 year old girl whose father is alcoholic who hurts her mother, and no one in the community helps. Eventually the mother burns down the house with her father in it. The song is written from the viewpoint of the 8 year old. The chorus is:

    Let freedom ring
    Let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today
    is a day of reckoning
    Let the weak be strong
    Let the right be wrong
    Roll the stone away
    Let the guilty pay
    It's Independence Day

The funny thing is that Sean Hannity used that song as his opener for years, never having a clue what it was really portraying. The author, Gretchen Peters, shook her head at how stupid that was. But there's more! Sarah Palin used it as her theme at appearances!! That made Gretchen Peters mad, because Sarah Palin was anti-abortion and never did a thing to protect children. So, Peters took all the proceeds from the song during that time and donated them to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin's name!

Doesn't that just make your day?!

No, they will just get more robots. As an interim measure the supervisors might get bigger whips.

Washington Post: “Nationally, covid-19 deaths have climbed steadily in recent weeks, hitting a seven-day average of about 1,500 a day Thursday, after falling to the low 200s in early July — the latest handiwork of a contagious variant that has exploited the return to everyday activities by tens [sic] of millions of Americans, many of them unvaccinated.”

  7. So far the reviews for the new movie version of “Dune” are positive. [Click] One reviewer said it could do with a little more madness. There is supposed to be one more part to it; I have not read the book—it seemed rather overwhelming.

    1. Splitting the book into two movies seems weird, although that's one way to get the time to do the book justice. The problem with the original movie was that the first 2/3 did a good job with the first thrid of the book, then it had to do a superficial summary of the last 2/3.

I noticed that this review never mentioned Paul's mother, who played a far more crucial role in the book than his father did. And I don't know how movie trainers are supposed to work, but all the fighting and dramatic, crashing music doesn't attract me.

    2. Egad--I just watched the trailer, and it puts me off seeing the movie altogether. If it has any significant relation to the book, it puts me farther off reading it. I'm voting for the sand worms, I think.

    3. Speaking of worms, things are not looking good for any of the Republicans running for Governor in California. Strangely, I have received one phone call from a Democratic boiler room and one postcard from Florida both urging me to vote against the recall, which I did nearly three weeks ago.

    4. While I wouldn't say the trailer has no significant relation to the book, it gives totally the wrong feel. It's almost like Starship Troopers, where I'm told the movie conveyed a message precisely opposite to that of the book.

    5. And by the way, have you ever heard of the Mahdi? Paul Mau'dib is clearly modeled on him in some ways.

    6. Thanks for saving me from the movie, Bill. And of course I've heard of The Mahdi; it would be worthwhile to work someone analogous into an epic novel, and "Mau'dib" seems to make it blatently obvious.

Lincoln Island, the home base of Nautilus and where Captain Nemo dies as related in Mysterious Island was situated at 34°57′S 150°30′W, coincident with the phantom island Ernest Legouve Reef (which is shown on my 1961 National Geographic globe, as is its companion phantom, Maria Teresa Reef). Point Nemo is located at coordinates 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W, so about 27 degrees east and 15 degrees south of Lincoln Island.
