    1. It is a scandal that public servants all over the country have not been protected against the virus. Our ambulances are not running and schools have to be closed because the bus drivers are sick! Can we say MANAGEMENT FAIL?

  2. Definitely clearer air this morning (0630 local time); reported AQI = 89, "moderate." Reported visibility 10 miles, but it looks more like 15-20 miles to me. We can see the foothills (albeit not clearly) for the first time in a long while.

  3. A few local headlines (stories behind paywall):

Fresno County registrar sees big return of mail-in recall ballots. What does that tell us?
(Well, it probably tells us that Democrats are voting in large numbers, but we shall see.)

    2. I do not understand this idea that Democrats tend to do mail-in ballots. I would expect mail-in to be particularly popular with seniors and rural voters; both groups overall lean Republican.

Of course Trump opposed mail-in, but we all know how reliable Trump is.

    3. The preumption seems to be that democrats are people who decide on the basis of facts and experience, plan ahead and have better things to do than stand in line on election day. Republicans, on the other hand, are perceived as people who like to be seen, act in lock-step with their social affiliates and crave being recognized. The anonymity of the ballot is not really a boon in their book.
Seniors have not been as reliable as expected. That is why their checks are often threatened to remind them that they could be penalized, if they do not "love" their representative as expected.

    4. Maybe it is different in other states, but in California in general, and this election (gubernatorial recall) specifically, it is a fact. The election has been underway for some time now, and the great majority of registered Democrats have already voted--not so with registered Republicans.

    5. It's the same in Vermont...Dems and Progressives here tend to be more trusting of the process and more willing to vote early.

"The mysterious disappearance of the lawyer John Pierce began last Tuesday, prosecutors say, when he missed a hearing for one of the many cases where he is representing a defendant in the Capitol riot investigation. The young associate who took his place said that Mr. Pierce had a “conflict.” At the time, no one seemed to give it much mind.

But in the days that followed, Mr. Pierce — who is defending more cases connected to the riot than any other lawyer — missed additional hearings and the reasons for his absence started changing.

On Wednesday, his associate told a judge in one case that Mr. Pierce had gotten Covid-19 and was in the hospital on a ventilator — but only after telling a prosecutor in another case that Mr. Pierce had been in a car accident. That same evening, a different associate told a reporter that Mr. Pierce had in fact been hospitalized, but was getting care for “dehydration and exhaustion.”

Finally, on Monday — after Mr. Pierce had still failed to emerge — the government got involved. Federal prosecutors issued letters to several judges in 17 Capitol riot cases, informing them that no one in the Justice Department had heard from Mr. Pierce in a week and that “multiple” phone numbers for his law firm appeared to have been disconnected."

  6. We have had a nice breeze and clearing air this afternoon; but that same NW breeze is prbobably the one pushing the forest fires down into Tahoe.

    1. I had good intentions of pulling some weeds this evening, but time got away from me. Tomorrow is supposed to be a little cooler/less hot anyway.

    2. The weeds will still be there. 😉
