Guernsey is now installed on it's very own DVD player. I have only to put Avengers back on the original and see if I can change it back to region one. (Thx for the links, Alan. And the info).\
Interesting. . . . some of the same music in the Avengers as in Wolf Hall. I believe Wolf Hall was making a bigger attempt at authenticity to the Tudor Period, but can't claim the music hadn't gone way further than that. Just truly odd to have to two juxtaposed in my head this way, lol!
Covid cases rise in all 50 US states as Delta variant spreads [Click] I am rather skeptical about the reports of rising case numbers, because of the surely very large number of people who are not being tested; but maybe the numbers being tested are a valid statistical sample.
On reading the above first note, I see it is easily misunderstood. I doubt that the reported case numbers are accurate, and expect that they are probably a good deal lower that the actual numbers of cases.
Bloomberg: “For the month of June, coronavirus was responsible for 337 deaths a day. For comparison, the historic average deaths from gunshots, car crashes and complications from the flu add up to 306 a day.”
Condensed from an opinion column: Maybe the pandemic won’t be in the rearview mirror by the midterm elections. Can’t say just how this will pay out, but the vaccine refuseniks are only part of the problem. The vaccinated are said to be increasingly angry with the unvaccinated, and will surely become ever more angry with new lockdowns, school closures and other restrictions.
I like to think of myself as a pretty laid back kind of gal, but the anti-vaxer/anti-masker types make me very angry indeed. Maybe it's just as well I remain largely homebound.
A while back I read an article saying that pecans are helpful for lowering both high blood pressure and high cholesterol. So, I got a one pound bag of roasted pecans, and found that I very much enjoy them. I prefer pecan pie, but my waistline doesn't need it. :( So, today it occurred to me to wonder whether there might be deleterious effects to eating roasted pecans compulsively. Here's the link to the article that popped up:
I once drove through the Rio Grande Valley, where they grow lots of pecans. The trees are planted in nurseries close together so they will grow straight and tall, up to roughly telephone pole size, then have all their limbs and their tops cut off and are pulled out of the ground (with some of the roots?) and planted in orchards. The nuts are harvested with real big shaker machines. Very robust trees.
Cat, did you encounter any opinions on the merits of raw pecans vs roasted...especially as regards health? I'd read somewhere that nuts (in general) are healthier raw. I believe it had to do with the oils used in the roasting, and how some go rancid, as well as how heat destroys some of the nutrients. But I'd be interested to hear what the latest buzz is on that.
There were a number of cases a year or two back of people coming down with shigella or salmonella--I forget which--from eating non-pasturized raw almonds.
We recently got a library card at the public library in Burlington, because they are one of the libraries that offer Kanopy, which service lets one stream movies and The Great Courses and much more. Very cool! Best of all, our library cards were very cheap because we're seniors. (Free to residents of Burlington, but folks from other towns pay a little bit.)
Weird--the USN setting them off near (photos in the news stories) the Gerald R. Ford supercarrier, but far enough away to not do any damage. That is in the range of a tactical nuclear weapon. Why practice being missed?

Just as info, the old player is not pausing or freezing on the Guernsey DVD, at all. The reason is was replaced in the first place. . . .

ReplyDeleteDr. Sanjay Gupta: there will be just two types of Americans now: The vaccinated and the infected. If you’re not vaccinated you almost certainly will eventually get infected. And if you get infected, many of you will get very sick and may die. [Click]

The short answer is, no ill effects. But it's amazing all the health benefits that are listed. Glad I read that initial article and acted upon it.
