Today [yesterday back east] I finished re-reading a short story [Winter’s King] by Ursula LeGuin in one of her small compendia, The Wind’s Twelve Quarters (1975). It is the first exploration of the world “Winter,” where The Left Hand of Darkness takes place. The story was first published in 1969, and when she began writing it she didn’t (at least fully) realize the people of Winter were androgynous. Thus she didn’t have the pronouns and titles quite right, but in this version she rectified those matters. I had read it so long ago that I had forgotten enough to make it almost like a first read—but I of course remembered the other Hainish Cycle stories, and I am sure I understood the story better this time because of it. Excellent story! Maybe it is time to re-read The Left Hand of Darkness. I remember that the off-worlder and a native take desperate flight across the coldest part of the planet; I think there was a bit about the natives having developed primitive radio as well—but it was a strategic secret. Also a bit about those rare natives stuck in a state of permanent Kemmer, and how society dealt with it.
