The day we learned that Bernie was in hospital, I sent a “be well” card to him at his campaign office. Last week I received a postcard from the campaign telling me that my card was the first one received! Firsties!! I used a card of one of my DIL’s paintings of the sunset over Lake Champlain, from Burlington. It’s practically the view from the area where Bernie lives. 😊
When politicians try to decide where to stand on weighty political issues that require immediate action…the natural urge is to conduct some polling…
But… we’ve seen over the years that this inclination to rely on polling while the action is still unfolding can result in suboptimal political strategies…
… even if you can construct an “accurate” poll, it likely can’t figure out what frame of “reality” people are going to be using to when it’s time to vote …
Issue polling may be better than nothing, … but … I’d probably rely on a more qualitative approach—what position do you believe most strongly in and could forcefully advocate no matter which way public opinion turned given new information?
Perhaps that standard comes with its own pitfalls, but in a hurricane, I’d trust a single, reasoned plan over one gleaned from the wisdom of the crowd.
listener--we were cleaning out the garage yesterday and rediscovered my old View-Master [Click] reels. Our View-Master disappeared long ago, but I have a modest collection of reels. It occurs to me that they would still be of interest in the children's section of a library. Is your local library so equipped? The viewers themselves are readily available; if they are interested or you think they would be, I would be happy to send my reels, and even foot the bill for a couple of viewers. Maybe someone else here has reels and/or viewer(s) they would be willing to donate. The great thing about them is they are very robust compared to the 19th- and earlhy 20th Century steroscopes (which I remember!). Please advise.
Said Trump: “We’ve had tremendous success I think over the last couple of days.”
“He added that ‘we’ve taken control of the oil in the Middle East’ — a claim that seemed disconnected from any known development there. He made the assertion twice Friday, but other U.S. officials were unable to explain what he meant.”
The video of AOC's introduction shows that the videographer was VERY far away--there was quite a time lag between the video and the audio. ============== Michael Moore, the liberal filmmaker who backed Sanders in the 2016 primary, also officially endorsed him on Saturday. “The only heart attack we should be talking about is the one Wall Street is going to have when Bernie Sanders is president,” he said.
That venue is rated for 20,000 people; they managed to slip in another 6,000 but still had to turn folks away. My home town had a population of about 4,500... the biggest town for about 150 miles up or down the coast. There were larger places two and three hours away on the other side of the mountains.
My home town grew from 18,000 in 1940 to 30,000 in 1950. It was the third largest town in Arkansas. So attendance at Bernie's rally just about matched the entire 1950 population above toddler age.
ReplyDeleteI have a Firsties story.

ReplyDeleteThanks for emailing me, Alan!
DeleteWe had our 12 year old granddaughter here (VT*Grand) last night and today, so I wasn't checking in with social media.

A one-second delay indicates a distance of a thousand feet. Same with lightning and thunder.
DeleteScroll down to get a hint of how big the crowd was. [Click] We ought to be getting a photo of the whole crowd sometime today.
ReplyDeleteVERY COOL!!

DeleteMy town has about 6,500. The neighboring town about 2,300. So....wow!
