  1. Whoooo! Grandson, who turns two on Sunday, was taken to the hospital today by ambulance when he woke up from his nap croupy, barfing and struggling to breathe!!! They used a Nebulizer to give medicine and steroids and he's doing a bit better now. =Whew!= They're going to watch him for a few hours, then let him go home. I'm betting Mom & Dad don't get much sleep tonight. And, to think, he took his nap here on Saturday while his parents house hunted.

    1. A reaction to something he ate? When Marc was less than a year old he woke up in the night struggling to breath. We used a nebulizer to humidify the room air, but were just getting dressed to take him to the emergency room when the episode eased. We attributed it to the strawberry something he had eaten that day, but we gradually reintroduced strawberries and there has been no further problem.

Anyway, sound like grandson is going to be OK. That's a relief.

    2. I hear you Bill. Grandson's Mom has lots of allergies, including to strawberries, and his Dad had asthma as a child. So allergies are at the top of the list of possible causes and concerns. The doctors think most likely he came in contact with an older child who was the carrier of an illness that Grandson got more strongly. At any rate, he's home tonight. They currently live with Grandson's maternal grandparents and "Nana" is a RN with 40 years experience. Today was the first time Grandson's Mom ever heard her mother say, "Call an ambulance." That had to be so scary.

    3. Scary, yes--but great to have someone there with authority, knowledge and a no-nonsense attitude.

My father would (I was told) break out in hives if he ate strawberries--unless they had been blanched with boiling water (advice someone gave my folks). Whether that would work for anyone else, I have of course no idea. My mom would put his strawberries in a colander and pour boiling water over them. They were a little wilted on the outside, but not much.
