Vermont Gov.-Elect Peter Shumlin has filled two more slots on his executive office staff.
Sue Allen will serve as special assistant to the governor. She is currently the executive director of Renewable Energy Vermont. Allen worked as press secretary for former Gov. Howard Dean. She was also a reporter and editor of the Barre-Montepelier Times Argus.
Shumlin has tapped Bianca Slota to serve as his press secretary. Currently, Slota is a general assignment reporter with WCAX and anchors WCAX’s 6 and 11 news casts.
Just watched "Night Moves" with Gene Hackman. A rather dystopic detective story. Too bad I couldn't catch some of the dialogue. Monday I get the newly restored, virtually complete, version of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis." Got our new inkjet printer installed, printed up some discs--worked fine. Installation was a piece of cake. Spoke with Naomi--she sounds fine. Side jobs with attorneys going nuts--not uncommon for the end of the year. Expect two jobs out of county this coming week, then another two or three in January. Not a one of them should be prosecuted in my opinion. (I also had some calls for cases where I told the defense attorneys their clients were had dead to rights.) And now to bed.
listener--I haven't made it for a long time, but I have my mother's batter bread recipe (no kneading batter bread, eh). Would be glad to send it along.
About an inch of snow on the ground and howling wind. Currently 29 deg but expected to plummet in the later afternoon. What Chicago sports fans cann "Bear weather." (Big game today -- as though all games weren't big at this point in the season.)
Speaking of football, the smow collapsed the roof of the Menneapolis Metrodome. The Bears are supposed to play there next week.
Well, that didn't take long, The fancy new TSA airport scanners will only detect bombs that are specially designed to be detectable. I'm sure Al Quaeda will comply with the design standards:
But private industry is making a fortune selling these things to the government, which soaks us for them one way or another. Ain't "democratic" capitalism great?
This recipe was cut down from a larger one. My mother had a knack with it that I lacked, but this is in her handwriting.
Dissolve one yeast in 2 2/3 cup warm water. [my note: can double yeast to rise faster]
Then add 4 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons oil.
Then add 5 1/2 cups flour and 4 teaspoons salt [my note: more flour seems better in my hands. different flours would work differently. we used just regular white flour from the store. I had good luck with 5.5 cups whole wheat flour once. The amount of salt could surely be decreased.]
mix with a tablespoon, lightly oil sides of bowl and top of bread, cover and rise two hours in a warm place.
grease two bread pans,s divide dough, grease [oil] tops and let rise one hour in pans.
Then bake 450 degrees 15 minures and 350 degrees one half hour or so.
Seem to have missed the snow and ice. Or it missed me. Got a bit of rain this morning, and most of the ice has disappeared from the river. Tomorrow: back to brutal.
Thanks, Alan. Leaves me wondering whether there is *any* good way to detect explosives. Maybe the "sniffers" that are (used to be? haven't seen them recently) used on items the X-ray machines identify as suspicious, and in Australia on randomly selected passengers.
Howard Dean and Bernie Sanders are First!
