  2. Dang, the hawk is back. He dined on a female cardinal too! I know hawks have to eat too, but darn. Explains why the feeders have been deserted all day. Once the little birds know the hawk is using the feeding area as a buffet they keep themselves scarce.

  3. Would a wider hood over the feeders help? Keep them from dive bombing, so to speak?

  6. Good links, puddle.

    What I wanna know is:
How did Susan's hawk know I posted a photo of a Cardinal today?

    Just got home from work.
Learned that a friend in town died Thursday, funeral is Tuesday.
She has been ill with cancer for a really long time.
She used to be our Town Clerk and worked beside me at the polls.
Never knew until today that she was a Lay Eucharistic Minister at her church.
So there she was, doing chemo, and bringing Communion to people.

I figure they gave her a suite in heaven, with a view.

  7. Thanks for the links, puddle. I guess I'll have to take the feeders down for a while. The thing is, the feeders are *in* a tree, and there's a huge bush right by it. There's really not that much "dive-able" area near the feeders. I hate to move the water because the birds can get by for a few days without the feeders, but there's no other open water once we get hit with the frigid temps - which are due back right quick.

  8. Had to postpone our Cookie Baking Day by a week due to tomorrow's forecast of sleet, then freezing rain, then rain, all with sustained winds of 20-35mph with gusts of 55-70mph!!

I sure didn't want family and friends on the roads during that mess!

Given that there is still some snow on the trees and that the soil is still soft, we could have a lot of uprooted and downed trees (any that survived the recent windstorm), and a lot of power outages...again. The crews still haven't caught up on sleep from the last onslaught!

I heard today that people sent "love letters" to the fire department and the electric crews for all their care and help. Seriously, one of my coworkers was trapped in her house due to trees resting on live, hanging power lines. So the fire department came to her house and checked on her. She lives alone and was so grateful!

  9. Maybe fruitcakes instead of love letters?

  10. listener, you mentioned having a problem with kneading bread a while back. Just wanted to tell you that there's a good no-knead bread recipe on the King Arthur flour website.

  11. Sad to say it is a case of survival of the fittest. The songbirds who are quickest and smartest don't get eaten. They go on to create chicks, who are hopefully quick and smart too.

Of course the same goes for the hawks. The ones who don't catch enough don't make it, and don't make chicks. The ones who do, do.

I guess, all things considered, nature is fair.

I still don't like seeing the hawks pick off the little songbirds. I find myself thinking of the local Sharp-shinned Hawk as a Republican and the songbirds as little progressives and dems.

I wonder which bird is the Bernie Sanders of the group.

I sent our Bernie a very warm thank-you letter today. He makes it just so easy to be a Vermonter and even makes it easy to be an American!

  12. Thanks, Susan! King Arthur is right here in Vermont too! (The bread company, not the English dude.)

  13. Maybe cookies or some Candy Cane Delight.

I really really dislike fruit cakes. They're too sweet for me. I'd rather have the fruit without the candied effect. If I want sweet, I'll have chocolate or ice cream. LOL!

  14. We have sparrow hawks that perch on a wire out our back window; they eat insects, believe it or not.

  15. I haven't made it in a long time, but I have my mother's batter bread recipe; would be happy to send it along.
