Well, I think maybe all this activism is having an effect on me. Today I received an email from my Rep’s campaign manager asking me to write a LTE in support of the new healthcare reform bill. Instantly I saw it as an opportunity! I wrote back saying I’d be happy to, but that I would first need to know whether my Rep has signed on as a cosponsor of the National Nurse bill, as it would be good to be able to make mention of that in my letter. Also, I said I need to know whom to contact to learn whether our small business is eligible for tax breaks on healthcare premiums.
Half an hour later I received an email from him saying he had passed my two questions along to a particular person who will get back to me soon with answers. He said to let him know when I hear. Best of all, the person who will be getting back to me is someone I knew from the Dean Campaign! Awesome! I love Vermont! ♥
Did you ever have the feeling that just as you were about the catch up, something else came in? Well, nobody would want to have *nothing* new coming in. But I could certainly have done without the Census's lengthy American Community Survey.
Not to be too negative, though. Beautiful day today. We ate out on the porch for the first time this year. And come Monday we'll have a new, energy-efficient heating system.
We got the census not long ago. It was short and stupid. There must have been a score or more of very specific categories and subcategories to choose from for race and ethnicity, but nowhere was the word disability, let alone categories and subcategories to choose from. No wonder they don't know how many of us there are; they can't even be bothered to count us. The largest single "minority" in the country, and they can't be bothered to count us.
On the other hand, I'm much too tired even to write a letter to the editor about it. What's the point?
That's the standard Census form, which we also got a couple of weeks ago. The American Community Survey is much, much longer and does ask about disability as well as about income (by type of income), how you get to work, education, etc., etc., etc.
I touched down from Alaska at 11:30 this morning, a day early. The court case was running REAL fast. Lotsa folks on certain routes returning from Spring break--took my chances on standby southbound out of Seattle this morning and made it. Weather was quite nice in Anchorage--clear, calm, no need for heavy clothing. Pouring rain when I went north through Seattle Monday evening, beautiful view of Mount Ranier when I left this morning.
I was rather disappointed in our census form--little more than asking how many people lived in our house.
Heard the head of the Census Bureau on The News Hour tonight. He said that this year's form is the closest to the original 1790 form ever, though he did make quite a lot of the diversity bit. Sounds like what Bill got is much more thorough and useful.
Howard Dean is entirely first!

That's great, listener. Well done.

Holy Cow--Decompressing from my Alaska job, and just read some news stories about the flooding in New England. Everybody here OK? I hope?
ReplyDeleteHi Alan! Glad you're home safe and sound.

Hi Alan and all!
ReplyDeleteWe're okay up here.
We've had swollen streams but had worse flooding a week or two ago than now.
South of us the folks are having it harder.
Glad you're safely home!
