Robert Prevost, 69, from Chicago, becomes first American pope and will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
Congratulations to Catreona and all Catholics! Congratulations to W.A. and all Chicagoans! Here’s hoping this means we’ve turned a corner on decent leadership in the US!
Pope Leo was born 14 September 1955.
Gosh! This is the first time I have been older than a Pope! (4 days! 🤣)
The new pope is “viewed as a centrist, a follower of [Pope] Francis,” says one veteran international diplomat who has worked with the Vatican for 20 years.
“He is progressive on social issues, and his work in Latin America has made him very popular in that part of the world.” Father Martin Browne of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Christian Unity finds the new Pope “humble, gracious and a good listener.” More here
Thanks for the note in the previous thread, listener. Will update as we move forward.
I haven't learned much about the new pope yet. My friend Jeff seems encouraged by some things he's read. I heard he's from the south side of Chicago--something he has in common with Barack Obama and my husband Demetrius.
I was happy to learn that I'm still younger than the pope by a decade. My parish priest, my doctor, my supervisor at work...not so much. I look forward (kinda) to being older than a president soon.
Thanks, Renee. It's encouraging to have someone from America (South Side of Chicago, too!) in a world-respected leadership position. I do hope this marks the turning of the leadership tide.
Note for you on the last thread, Renee. 🐾🧡
