    Two Parties
August 23, 2024 By Taegan Goddard

Jonathan Last: “Consider the following: Democrats featured Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton—that’s all but one of the living Democratic presidential nominees going back to 1992.”

“The Republican convention featured no former presidential nominees. The state of the Republican party is so toxic that previous nominees—even previous presidents—have been unpersoned and read out of the movement.”

“That’s a portrait of two institutions: One institution in harmony with its legacy and continuing to evolve in such a way as to hold its coalition together. The other institution in a state of convulsion.”

    1. Would that be North Convulsion or South Convulsion?

    2. I think it's the West Convulsion. --nordy

    Happy news!
The Monarch Butterfly I thought had expired was later seen resting upright and this morning, as we broach 70°F for the first time all week, he was gone! He fledged after all! Huzzah!!

  3. I really liked the meeting with Howard on Zoom that just finished. Howard was really himself--plainspoken and prodigiously intelligent and insightful. A couple of my favorite quotes: "Politics is war by other means [Clauswicz]."
"Even though Trump is a bubbling fool, he does share some characteristics with Adolph Hitler." --nordy

Thank you, nordy! The grands are
just now headed to bed, so I was unavailable. So sorry to miss it. Will there be a video?

    2. I don't know if there will be a video. I'm sure they said, but I was having a hard time getting set up and didn't notice. --nordy

  6. Very nicely cool here today; the high temperature was only 78F, and that for a very short time. We have no difficulty with accepting that.

  7. I also got a note from Liane*in*VT about the Dean Zoom call. She wrote:

It was a very focused meeting - Judith had a slate of questions she asked about effective politics in a rural area. Then opened the floor for the last 5-ish minutes for questions from others. Terri Mills piped up with a strategy from her area of having political leaders in a city/town adopt a "neighborhood" (in her case 50 houses of known democrats) to connect with. The leaders draw up canddiate slates - based on who's the best/strongest candidate in that district, then have the neighborhood leaders meet & talk with their adopted neighbors. It's a very effective GOTV tactic.

For areas where you can't run as a democrat, and where the opposition candidate is running as a bully, then pick some issues where that person is known to be pretty bad, and run on those. Don't try to engage with the bullying side, just focus on things like, "gave out a road contract to a crony w/o a competitive bid and the road still isn't fixed" or whatever. Since they're usually pretty corrupt, it's often easy to find that kind of lever.

He also suggested, if the Rs are deeply embedded and have been for decades, running a former military person is often helpful, because their normal hate/attack tactics don't work. So find a democratic veteran, and convince them to run.

    1. There are ongoing (and apparently very promising) programs to crossbreed American chestnuts with east Asian varieties that are not susceptible to blight. But there are also some native trees that are naturally resistant--- just as among European chesnuts.
