  2. On closer examination, I see these are delphiniums, my favorite flower. They are a lot of work to grow; they need staking to preserve their height. But nothing equals their beauty, in shades of blue, pink, white, and lavender. --nordy

But, this is something, at least...

Biden Crisis Upended by Trump Rally Shooting
July 14, 2024 at 7:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 40 Comments

“Congressional Democrats’ all-consuming angst over President Biden’s candidacy has taken an abrupt backseat in lawmakers’ minds in the wake of an assassination attempt against former President Trump,” Axios reports.

“Democratic lawmakers say their immediate focus is on their personal security and that of their staffs, not on their party’s political woes, helping to allow a crucial cooldown period for the embattled president.”

  4. (Susan) This is the United States of America, it is not Trumplandia. Our motto is “E pluribus unum”, from many we are one. It is not “One Nation under God” that was added in the 50’s during the “Red Scare”. But if the sky-is-falling Democrats don’t stop running from Biden it WILL become Trumplandia and every one of us will suffer accordingly. I have been a Democrat all my life, but still the cowardice of the Democratic Party enrages me. They run around like chickens who have a fox in the hen house. Republicans stand united behind the most unfit for office caricature of a human being to exist. So while Democrats play by the rules and obey the laws, Republicans recognize no rules and no laws. I don’t understand why Democrats don’t see that. I really don’t.

    2. Yep. The general idea seems to be that this, her third strike, may finally be the right time for Smith to ask to have her removed. At that point a new judge can be assigned and, owing to Cannon's foot dragging, that new judge will not be bound by any of her prior findings and such, since there aren't any.

    2. Via Talking Points Memo:
TPM Reader KO sent me this lede from an AP piece from February of this year.

Former President Donald Trump told thousands of members of the National Rifle Association that “no one will lay a finger on your firearms” if he returns to the White House, and bragged that during his time as president he “did nothing” to curb guns.

“During my four years nothing happened. And there was great pressure on me having to do with guns. We did nothing. We didn’t yield,” he said as he addressed the NRA’s Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Friday evening.

  11. Juar back from our morning constitutional. Reported current temperature 86F, predicted high 103F. Seems cooler than yesterday, and there is a nice variable breeze. I was able to walk a full two km for the first time in quite a while. My clothing is soaked in sweat; time for a shower and then we will hide out inside.

  12. Saw Vance on Meet the Press. Very clever at evading questions and parroting the Trump line. There's something very harsh about him, which is probably why Trump picked him. --nordy

  16. So good to know that Trump's choice of Vance is making a difference to people who really matter.
Bloomberg--Stocks rose as wild volatility calls failed to materialize after ex-President Donald Trump’s assassination attack. He tapped U.S. Sen. JD Vance as his running mate.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit an all-time high. Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. soared 31%. Conservative video-sharing platform Rumble Inc. jumped 21%. Trump’s rising odds of victory boosted oil producers, gunmakers and private prisons. His pro-cryptocurrency stance lifted the industry. Tesla rallied as Elon Musk endorsed Trump. Solar firms sank as Democrats are seen as more friendly toward the sector. --nordy

    3. Of course there is variation depending on the particular teacher, but all teachers in California nowadays must pass a Constitution course to get a teaching certificate. The Constitution is covered in 8th grade History and 12th grade Constitution courses. (According to a quick check of the Internet.) I found mention of one district that requires students to pass the INS test to graduate. I remember that our teacher gave the Articles of Confederation short shrift (with particular emphasis on interstate taxes); while idling in the County Law Library one day (probably between court cases) I found and read the Articles, and I formed the opinion that they deserve study; they make sense of some parts of the Constitution, for instance. And they clearly state that the union is perpetual and indivisible (although of course setting out a particular method for dissolving it, which the Confederacy did not follow). Although the Constitution supersedes the Articles, it does not revoke them wholesale. I think it was in that same volume that I found and read Thomas Jefferson's investigation of whether the English government/constitution was Christian in origin--- and his conclusion that it was not.

  19. I'd like your opinion on something. Wil believes that after DT pumped his fist three times and shouted "Fight! Fight! Fight!" that he then gave a Nazi salute before he pumped his fist again. Is that what you saw, or did you think he was just waving? I haven't heard anyone mention it in the media, but I think Wil may well be correct. See what you think...

    2. I think his fist was mostly clenched, and his behavior was a demonstration of theatrical instinct. In a photo from today (at the GOP convention?) he had a tiny bit of gauze on the afflicted bit of his ear; in that respect his theatrical instincts seem to have failed him--- he should have had a larger dressing applied. I agree that the photo of the bullet passing by his head is convincing.
