Very nice blue sky with white clouds and a cool (not cold) breeze out of the north this afternoon. Miyoko noticed a flock (twenty or thirty?) of egrets in the river botom; a little later many of them had migrated to trees growing from sandbars and the others had spread out on the water. Later they all disappeared.
I saw a news report about Mr. Biden visiting Pueblo, Colorado, to tout the big funding award to the wind electric generator factory there-- if I remember correctly, they said it is already the biggest such factory in the world. That is a logical location, at the western edge of the high plains, allegedly the most reliably windy area in the world, and with good road and rail transportation. They said although the generators could be manufactured for less in China, the cost of shipping makes the Chinese generators more expensive than the American ones. That all makes sense, but I was struck by how CLEAN things in Pueblo looked. I went there while on vacation about fifty years ago, to see the steel mill (complete with coke ovens); the town was completely gray and stunk of coal tar--a terrible place to live, albeit with a goodly number of jobs. Wikipedia tells me that the blast furnaces (and thus the coke ovens) were closed about forty years ago.
So when are they going to put something in Gary, Inciana? That was the country's biggest center of blast furnaces before everything shut down. Where Minnesota iron ore and Pennsylvania coal converged. Now it is one of the country's prime centers of depopulation and poverty
Overcast this morning, and warmer. High temperatures in the 60'sF predicted for the next ten days.
