Cat: Howie might run—lots of time to declare.

    1. Hope you're right about Howie, Alan.

Bill, your plaint on the last thread gave me a good chuckle. Indeed, it does seem inconsiderate of all these people to throw in the towel before one hundred.

  3. I give up! My plans for a Veterans Day post proved just too complicated. It's one thing designing a free standing web page; it's another thing entirely working within a template all of whose moving parts you can't see, much less control. I'm gonna go with Listener's pretty and patriotic photo and post relevant links on the thread throughout the day, just like usual.

    1. Ohhh, I do understand! It's nearly all geek to me. We do well to muddle along as well as we do with all the changes that are thrust upon us from time to time. Would be nice if we could all simply sign in as ourselves rather than being AnonyMice.

  4. I'm impressed. I've lived here, in this house, for nearly 25 years, and just now was the first local cell phone call! Don't know what they're doing, but boy does it work!

    1. Great stuff! I am old enough to remember our family's magneto phone (I was too young and too short to operate it)--I think our ring was three long, two short (party line, of course). And years later came long distance direct dial! Now directly calling folks on another continent is so humdrum as not to justify special mention. Telex and switchboards are historical artifacts. It's a little surprising that you can get cell phone reception, what with being in the national radio quiet zone-- must be a matter of the operational frequency.
      Enjoy!

    2. Congratulations, Puddle. Welcome to the brave new world of cell phones. I hope for your sake you can't receive text messages, or else that the DNC doesn't have your number!

    3. Ah, you misunderstand, lol! I don't *have* one, I got a call, local, from someone who does have one--my kid. I do know that when we drive to or from Virginia, he knows exactly where the cell phone towers are and how wide they cast.
But today he was at the store at the turn in the road, and I have never had an out of state person call on their own phone from there. Ever.

Howard Gresham Hawkins III(born December 8, 1952) is an American trade unionist, environmental activist, and perennial candidate from New York. A co-founder of the Green Party of the United States, Hawkins was the party's presidential nominee in the 2020 presidential election and is filed as a candidate for the 2024 presidential election. I really liked his 2020 running mate, Angela Walker, too.

    1. Wikipedia: [Click] “After her 2020 vice presidential campaign, Walker announced on her personal Facebook page that she has retired from politics.” Oh, well.

    2. Pity about Walker. Still, it's good news about Howie. Thanks, Alan.

    3. Hmmm, 2024 Green Party presidential primaries [Click]

      "Declined to be candidates</strong
As of November 2023, the following notable individuals have been the subject of speculation about their possible candidacy, but have publicly denied interest in running.

Howie Hawkins, party co-founder and Green/Socialist nominee for president of the United States in 2020"

    4. Well now. His page definitely says he has filed. But a Google search for Howie Hawkins 2024 brings up the 2020 campaign web site. So he's obviously not organized yet.

Massachusetts has closed primaries. I'd like to vote for Sen. Warren in her primary, but I'd also like to vote for Howie in the Green presidential primary. You can change your party registration online, but it takes a couple weeks to take. So, it depends on the timing.

Along with rank choice voting, we really need open primaries. I was registered Green for a while in 2020, but had to change back to vote for Sen. Markey and Rep. Neal's primary opponent. After that I just stayed registered Dem. It was easier. But I do resent it.

    5. In Illinois you can only vote in one primary, but you choose which primary when you show u0 to vote. You aren't registered by party,

    6. Out here the parties decide if people registered with other parties can vote in their primaries; Dems say it's OK, GOP says no. Since my precinct is all vote by mail, that makes it a bit more difficult to pull off. Pretty quick to change registration online; I have been known to register Democratic for the primary (to vote for Bernie), then back to Green. The Greens seem pretty useless as a political party out here, but I want them to remain recognized on the ballot, which depends on their registration numbers. Our relatively new jungle primary system was at least in part intended to undercut minor parties, but doesn't adversely affect presidential elections. For US Senator I still plan to vote for Barbara Lee in the primary, and then for Katie Porter in the runoff. Sexist, I guess.

  6. I'm more worried about the Electoral College than third-party candidates. The EC gave us Bush and Trump. Doesn't speak well for them and disaster for us. (Susan)

    1. Way back when, they also gave us Benjamin Harrison, if memory serves. And *he* wasn't much to write home about either.
