  2. If Santos is made to resign, does that nullify any votes he has cast? You know, like, for Speaker?

  3. Yesterday afternoon we had noticed the river was rising quikly (far from any threat to us), and here is the explanation:

FRIANT, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Water levels in the San Joaquin River have risen after the Bureau of Reclamation released water from Friant Dam amidst the latest round of storms.

It was a move made to create room in Millerton Lake, as officials expect more rain and a busy snowmelt season soon to come, with nearly double a typical year’s snowpack.

  4. More about the Virginia school shooting. [Click] To say that Virginia’s laws about such matters are lax is a monumental understatement.

    1. "Virginia does not have a law that requires unattended guns to be stored in a particular way or a law that requires gun owners to affirmatively lock their weapons."

At least they're not going to try a 6 year old as an adult. That child needs help immediately. I hoped to hear of some charges for the mother, to be honest, for not locking up the gun. But, this is where we are.

  5. First of all, laws do not affect behavior. Secondly, a six year old has not attained the age of reason and cannot be intentional. Also, children are considered the property of parents. If they run wild, they can be rounded up like cattle.
What the Constitution does permit is the strict control of commerce. The importation and sale of firearms can be banned, just like the importation and sale of slaves. Banning commerce does not affect ownership. Which is why the industry wants to keep the discussion fixed on owners.

    1. I look forward to hearing why the mother bought a gun in the first place; I sure hope it wasn't to defend herself against antifascists, but suppose we will see in time. Probably didn't have to take a gun safety class.

    2. My schtick today isthat Republicans are good at promising things that cannot be achieved. Safety and security come to mind. But they may well be motivated by a deep sense of disdain. It is not new.
Remember the ad "promise her anything, but give her Lanvin"? Disrespect. It is so pervasive. When some communities object, they are scorned and then another target is identified.

10 AM here, there is a lot of clear blue sky, and the sun has come out. Although the river has obviously risen, the river valley is wide and deep here, formed by millenia of uncontrolled freshets. Our house is, I would guess, sixty or seventy feet above the river—maybe more.

  7. Katie Porter has announced her candidacy for the California Senate seat now occupied by Feinstein. California has an open primary from which the top vote getters proceed to the general.
It has occurred to me that she was really wasted on the House.
Perhaps because she still has school age children, she is not ready for an administrative position.
She takes no corporate contributions. Which means, to my way of thinking, that she is not into extorting employers to produce votes for her.

    1. There is talk of Barbara Lee running also; she has spoken for me for a very long time, but she is getting on in years. I would be happy with either one.

    1. I read that they have been diverting considerable water to grow alfalfa, which is a very thirsty crop; chances are that much of it has been exported to China. That is what happened around here.

    1. We actually got a slid dusting of snow last night and it's cold today, so it has stayed. More Thursday, rain Friday, ending with a bit of snow Saturday as we're heading off to Maine...for Grandson's 7th birthday.
