    1. I gather that the rioters hoped to bring about a military coup, but there an awful lot of people in Brazil who remember the horrors of the military dictatorship, and many others who heard about it from their parents.

  2. Survived it. Really like all of the medical team which numbered into the hundreds. Worst part was driving home into setting sun with dilated eyes. Slept after for 22 hours. Operations--> Feb 1 and 15.

    2. Soooo glad to hear this! That's quite an impressive medical team! Boo for the setting sun --- OUCH!
When I am able, some time next week, I'll call you. I want to hear about those operations.

  3. It is horrifying to me to see the poisonous hate that trump ignited spreading throughout the world.

    1. You give Trump too much credit. These memes were spreading well before he was ever elected.

    2. Trump's strength or poison or whatever is, seems ton me, that he gave hate-filled people permission to spew their filth, to totally eschew and repudiate decency. After all, he does,.

    3. The monsters we mostly kept locked in the basement since a decade or so after the fall of the Whig Party have broken out again. Getting them back under control was extraordinarily difficult back then, and so it will be this time; but I do not doubt that we will again manage to do it.

    4. I greatly appreciate your optimism, Alan. I agree. It may not happen in our lifetime, but I believe the generations behind us are up to it, judging by my grands.

    1. It looks like the river has risen by about a foot since yesterday--definitely no big here. We were supposed to get scattered thundershowers yesterday, but no such luck.

  5. This evening I will be leaving for Arisia science fiction convention in Boston. Taking the Lake Shore Limited there and back. Will be back next Wednesday morning. May or may not have a chance to check the blog while I'm gone.

  7. It just so happens that right now I'm reading both the Jan. Sixth Report and Arthur Schlesinger's A Thousand Days. The contrast between Trump and Kennedy (whom I particularly admire for his courage and stubborn determination in the face of chronic and terrible pain) could not be more stark.

    1. Cat, if you find anything we don't already know in the Jan 6th Report, please note the page numbers and pass it on. I have it, but haven't had chance to read it yet.
