    1. What I'm thinking is that Ms. Hutchinson is a comely, ambitious young woman whose dad lives on five acres in New Jersey. She graduated with honrs went to a stat college in Newport News, Va and was introduced to the Capitol hill internship program.
Once there, her name resonated with the friends of Asa Hutxhinson and Kay Bailey Hutchison, who preceded Cruz as Senator from Texas and then got relegated as permanent rep to NATO from Aug '17 to Jan 20 '21.
So, Ms. Hutchinson transitioned from Scalice, to Cruz into the Executive upon graduation because, in addition to smart, she's a hard worker and takes notes.
Meanwhile, as she was following her dream, her parents divorced. Dad, the owner of a tree trimming service is a small-business guy who resents government directives, with good reason. Lots of people do not realize that when they take out a business license, they voluntarily subject themselves to state directives.
It hardly seems fair, as we are all becoming aware via the regulation of abortion clinics out of existence--an agenda that got under way because the AMA resented the clinic interlopers and midwives competing with doctors for a shrinking pie. Child bearing has been decreasing since before 1969, when I had my last one.
My three children, all married, have produced a grand total of five--below replacement rate. Not giving the Phd woman a permanent job didnot induce her to have more. Reproduction is dangerous. Why risk it, if you don't have to?
People who engage in intercourse for pleasure take prophylactic measures to avoid pregnancy. Which means that the vast majority of interventions to terminate are the consequence of some kind of abuse.
Which brings me to the point that the U.S. legal system response to abuse is problematic. It allows school children to be beaten with paddles, places children with strangers if parents are negligent and tells women to protect themselves. Assault is a misemeanor unless damage is permanent or the victim is in law enforcement.

  2. Guardian headline:

The US supreme court just made yet another devastating decision for humanity

The EPA ruling means it may now be mathematically impossible through available avenues for the US to achieve its greenhouse gas emissions goal
The US supreme court just made yet another devastating decision for humanity

Well, simple economics, combined with the Sierra Club's "Beyond Coal" campaign, will go a very long way toward fixing things. And when electric cars become readily available, they are going to sell like hotcakes.

    1. Fact is the permitting regimen of the EPA (thank Nixon) was totally ineffective in preventing environmental degradation. Because, as Justice Kennedy spent years explaining, permits are based on the presumption that the activity being permitted is beneficial. The intent of the legislation was to placate citizens and run interference on behalf of industry.
That is why California prohibited air pollution and Florida prohibits ground water pollution.

  7. (Susan). So, I popped into Meijer Pharmacy this morning to see about scheduling a second booster and they gave me the shot right then. I got Moderna this time. The woman who gave me the injection said she has heard that they are working on a vaccine specifically against Omicron.

    1. Yep. They aren't sure which variant(s) of Omicron to use in the vaccine, but they figure to have it ready in October. This is probably going to be like a flu shot. Since China doesn't have a good vaccine or a big vaccination program, we can expect previous variants to come visiting from there again. It seems the Russian vaccine is probably pretty good, but even Russians distrust it, and their vaccination rate is low. Kinda like Trumpistas.

    2. Oh, and the Russians keep trying to cut corners on their vaccine's safety and efficacy studies, so it didn't yet have WHO approval the last I heard.

  10. It [again] occurs to me that the US hasn't seen the collapse of a major political party since that of the Whigs in the mid-1850's, about 165 years ago; that has surely convinced many people that it can't happen here, but it has happened in a number of countries very recently. I think it is anybody's guess just how it might proceed in the US in the 21st Century. This could be interesting as all get-out. I'm all up for it.

    1. From a history of the US Whig Party: “It’s remarkable how fast it all fell apart for the Whigs,” says Wallach. “From right before the 1852 election thinking they were in good shape, to 1854 being clearly obsolete and in 1855 literally going out of business. " And the transcontinental telegraph wasn't completed until 1861; news traveled a lot slower back then.

Playbook spoke to British documentarian Alex Holder — whose raw video footage was subpoenaed by the January 6 Committee — and learned about an unscheduled call Donald Trump had with Russian president Vladimir Putin during a packed day of campaigning just days before the presidential election.

Alex Holder, a British documentary filmmaker who had extensive access to Donald Trump and his family ahead of and after the 2020 election, is testifying this morning behind closed doors to the January 6 Committee, the New York Times reports.

Holder’s footage — some 11 hours of it with the Trump family discussing the campaign and the election — was subpoenaed by the committee ahead of the interview.
