  1. Got today's thread up late, so here's what was patiently posted today on the previous thread...

Boeing 737 Max disaster casts long shadow as planemaker tries to rebuild fortunes [Click] It seems that Boeing’s next big innovation is to move its corporate headquarters from Chicago (which has not worked nearly as well as Seattle) to Arlington, VA (close to the Pentagon). The article does not mention Boeing’s Starliner project, which strikes me as a debacle and an advertisement for SpaceX.

It seems that part of what went on with Starliner is that the government assumed Boeing knew what it was doing and concentrated its advice and support on the SpaceX startup. Bad assumption, as it turns out.

    1. I read a column by a consulting engineer who developed a new cockpit design for Boeing airliners. He moved the many controls rarely or never used by the pilots and put them into a pop-out drawer, thereby greatly simplifying the pilots' control panel. Boeing execs rejected it. A year or two later he saw very nearly the same thing on a new Airbus. I have seen photos of the Starliner control panel; classic Boeing design on steroids. Crew Dragon: dramatically simpler. Granted that the Boeing design is more modern than that of the Soyuz in that it uses electronic rather than electromechanical controls, it doesn't reflect user interface design developments of recent decades.

  2. One of our cats had not been eating and had lost a lot of weight; we feared he might be dying and had set up a veterinarian appointment for tomorrow. But this morning he started eating again--put away a full can of tuna. Whew! He is a mostly outdoor cat and pretty old for that. The other cat was a partly indoor cat and since getting older and losing his outside territory he has become almost completely an indoor cat. He's weaker and less active than he used to be, but aren't we all?

    1. Whew! So happy to hear your kitty may be okay after all!
A neighbour of ours just moved across the country to Oregon. He decided to do so in his pickup truck, packed with belongings and his gray cat, Sterling. He also decided to take a meandering route to see some of the country along the way. It was hard on the outdoor cat to travel 500 miles in a day in the truck and have to stay in the truck most of the time (except at night in a motel). By the time they got to Oregon, yesterday, the kitty seemed uncomfortable and it turned out he couldn't pee, due to a UTI. So he's at the vet for a few days, then can finally settle in to his new home!
It's so sweet of this neighbour to move way out to Oregon. He's doing it to help his SIL raise her two young children after the untimely death of his brother this past year, by Covid. My neighbour is a lovely gay man, and has a very close relationship with a nephew there. It will be so good for all of them.

  3. Re-shoring of manufacturing to North America is happening much faster than I had imagined. [Click] Picky though it is, I note with disapproval that the speaker confuses the pronunciation of "fiat" as in "fiat currency" with that of the Italian automobile.

  4. I suppose that it is because I used a brand name that blogspot deleted my post about use of a nutsedge killer. I found that it was indeed selective, and was very effective. That solves a longstanding problem in our flower beds. I might even give it a try in our lawns, although that is of less concern.

    1. Blogspot randomly deletes posts as they are being typed. If you hadn't posted it yet, that could be unrelated.
