Nothing much; it was a quick way to not get rich, that's for sure. But as summer jobs went, it was OK. It sure beat nailing pallets together by hand, which was the other job that was always advertised in the student newspaper.--- Anonymous Alan
My dad sold ice cream a couple different times. The first time, he had a cooler trailer he pulled with the car. It kept the ice cream cold using dry ice. That stuff was mean! The second time, he drove an ice cream truck (not owned by him). It was a Summer job and the story goes that my brother went with him one day. He must have been about 12 at the time, and (without permission) attempted to make himself an ice cream cone while Dad was driving. Only...he couldn't figure out how to turn off the machine! So he got a pretty tall ice cream cone by the time Dad could pull over and help. As I heard the story, Dad made him eat the whole thing, to teach him a lesson.
We didn't have Ice cream trucks where I grew up. You wanted Ice cream, you went to the Dairy Queen or the drug store soda fountain. I've occasionally seen them around here. Only a few times a summer and not every summer.
Every morning when we loaded up our trucks we would get two plates of dry ice, which we broke up and tossed around inside the box. It kept the ice cream cold through the day, and when we returned to the yard the refrigerator would be plugged in for the night. I remember one fellow carrying and breaking the dry ice with his bare hands; later I managed to get a look at his hands, and he had by far the most spectacular caluses I have ever seen--they were like gloves.
It is my considered opinion that the most negative consequence of discrimination on the basis of personal characteristics is the selection of "tokens" which then become "exceptions to prove the rule." Clarence Thomas is apparently good at memorization, a definite plus given the traditional legal and medical curriculum, employed good diction and a forceul personal presence. That he does not get process is not important as lng as he imitates the behavior of those who do. Very likely he did not consult with his colleagues when he voted as his wife expected him to. Keep in mind that attention to process was also missing in the Roe v. Wade reversal
UK school Latin course overhauled to reflect diversity of Roman world [Click] Naomi wanted to study Latin in middle school, and we managed to pull it off; the retirement of the one Latin teacher in the school district was a problem, but the course had been kept on the books, and we (she and I together) did it as an independent study via TV broadcasts from Virginia. I was very happy to fill that gap in my education, and benefitted from it. Having studied both Spanish and German on top of being a Modern English speaker, I can see that Latin is far enough back on the family tree of Indo-European languages to have all their basic features. A person who has a basic understanding of Latin need have no fear of any Indo-European language, modern or extinct. I think that starting with Interlingua (as some European school systems do), then progressing to Latin and thence to a modern language would be a first-rate curriculum.
I took Latin in high school and was definitely a help when I later studied German and Russian and even (less intensively) Korean. The big thing is that it taught me the way English does things doesn't necessarily apply to other languages.
Grand is here through Tuesday evening. She is incredibly sweet and we are having SO much fun! I'm headed to bed right now, though, as she rises a full two hours earlier than my usual time. I'm hoping to make it through the day tomorrow without requiring a nap. It'll be a first. LOL.
Pretty fancy ice cream trucks! The one I drove was an old pickup truck with a freezer compartment in back.
