Lighthouses: Burlington, Vermont

These two lighthouses mark the breakwater at Burlington, so boats don't hit it.  They work great.  The one silhouetted at sunset used to have white siding all the way down.  When Irene struck Vermont, Lake Champlain rose so high that the siding was ruined up to the point you see it missing.  It was decided to leave it that way in tribute.

  1. Pretty hard to top: GOP Lawmaker Steps Down After Sending Misinformation [Click]
New Hampshire state Rep. Ken Weyler (R) stepped down from his leadership position after sending an email to colleagues [stating] that the coronavirus vaccine contains a “living organism with tentacles” and darkens the eyes of newborns, New Hampshire Pubic Radio reports. He also worked in the Catholic Church, but that part isn’t quoted.

    1. Yes, the Catholic influence in New Hampshire tends to ignored. Casual consideration might lead one to associate the Church with French Canadians.

  3. Re the lighthouses, I still think they ought to have one or more sirens to call the boats in when high winds are coming. Old air raid sirens should be available for modest prices. Boy, I can still remember how those things moaned. In my home town the fire station had (and might still have) a a big whistle on top; they whistled various codes to indicate where the fire was, so the volunteer firemen could go straight there rather than waste time going to the fire station first. We lived about four miles away, and could hear the whistle clearly (weather permitting).

    1. In Japan the neighborhood fire stations typically have bell towers; the bells are struck with hardwood mallets. Japanese bells, like Chinese bells, have the rim thickened on the inside and are struck on the outside, just the opposite of European bells.

    2. Well, the Coast Guard Station is right there on the Burlington shore, can put up warning flags, and send their boats out to warn as needed. The ferries have loud horn-power, so I suppose that could be used. I don't think it's often an issue. High winds don't sneak up on us so much, because of the Adirondacks on one side of the Lake and the Green Mountains on the other.

    3. I don't have to remember the sirens. If I am awake at 10 am Tuesday I can still hear them being tested. Altough these days they are severe weather sirens rather than air raid sirens.

    1. In a Nutshell...
      Senate Judiciary Committee:
FINDING 1: President Trump repeatedly asked DOJ leadership to endorse his false claims that the election was stolen & assist his efforts to overturn the election results, beginning on the day AG Barr announced his resignation and cumulating to the January 6 insurrection. /7
      ·
FINDING 2: White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows asked Acting Attorney General Rosen to initiate election fraud investigations on multiple occasions, violating longstanding restrictions on White House-DOJ communications about specific law enforcement matters. /8
      ·
FINDING 3: After personally meeting with Trump, Jeffrey Bossert Clark pushed Rosen and Donoghue to assist Trump’s election subversion scheme—and told Rosen he would decline Trump’s potential offer to install him as Acting Attorney General if Rosen agreed to aid that scheme. /9
      ·
FINDING 4: Trump allies with links to the “Stop the Steal” movement and the January 6 insurrection participated in the pressure campaign against DOJ, including U.S. Representative Scott Perry (R-PA), PA State Sen. Doug Mastriano, and Trump campaign advisor Cleta Mitchell. /10
      ·
FINDING 5: Trump forced the resignation of U.S. Attorney Byung Jin (“BJay”) Pak, whom he believed was not doing enough to address false claims of election fraud in Georgia. Trump then went outside the line of succession when naming an Acting U.S. Attorney. /11
      ·
FINDING 6: By pursuing false claims of election fraud before votes were certified, DOJ deviated from longstanding practice meant to avoid inserting DOJ itself as an issue in the election. DOJ took overt steps to investigate false claims of election fraud before certification. /12

More will come to light. We're still waiting on additional Trump White House records from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), dating back to November 3, 2020. And we will conduct additional witness interviews as appropriate. /13

At this point in our investigation, we can say that, without a doubt, Donald Trump’s efforts to spread his "Big Lie" and undermine the results of the election helped incite almost 1,000 Americans to breach the Capitol in a violent insurrection on January 6, 2021.

    2. Heather Cox Richardson:
The minority of the Senate Judiciary Committee promptly published a rebuttal, defending the former president by saying that “President Trump listened to his advisors, including high-level DOJ officials and White House Counsel and followed their recommendations.”

      My comment...

That will be shown to be false, but I have to add that even were it true, the buck stops with the President, and ignorance of the law is no excuse ... *especially* for the President! He was clearly trying to subvert our democracy.

  5. Completely off topic, China's aggressive behavior in recent years has prompted Japan to modify its two large helicopter carriers to accommodate F-35B stealth fighters. One has been so modified, and modification of the other will begin this year. They would have to be considered light carriers, since they don't have catapults or arresting gear; the F-35B's are short takeoff, vertical landing aircraft. For now the F-35B squadrons will be land-based. It has evidently gained China's attention.

  7. U.S. Economy Added Only 194,000 Jobs in September
October 8, 2021 at 9:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“U.S. job growth fell to the slowest pace of the year in September, as the Delta variant and a persistent shortage of workers restrained the ability of companies to hire,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The economy added 194,000 jobs in September, the smallest gain since December 2020 and down from the upwardly revised 366,000 jobs added in August, the Labor Department said Friday. The jobless rate fell to 4.8% from 5.2% a month earlier. The rate fell largely because many workers exited the labor force.”
