Hyannis Lighthouse

  1. That's the shortest, smallest lighthouse I've ever seen! Would it even be visible to ships at sea?

    1. I have seen one that was about that height, but it was on a headland. And this one is too close to all those houses to have a foghorn.

    2. Wikipedia article: Hyannis Rear Range Light [Click] The lighthouse and its now no longer present mate were intended just to guide vessels to the wharf, not for offshore navigation.

    3. Thanks, Alan! You saved me having to say it.

There is, though, still a stone lighthouse out where one is needed.

    4. We have much smaller lighthouses on Lake Champlain!

    1. I thought it was rather interesting; we already know it is potentiated by even silent strokes.

  4. Wil got the booster last evening. He only had a sore arm and was a little tired with the first two doses. But this time he has fever of 100.4, a headache and is a bit nauseous.

    2. Happily, yes!

It was gone when I woke this morning and I am back to my good self again.

But I have to say this has given me something of a chip on my shoulder towards those who could be vaccinated but won't. And I have far less patience for those who won't wear masks. I'm just DONE being gracious...and I don't say that lightly.

    3. It's good to take turns with such things. I expect Wil to feel considerably better tomorrow.

  5. The 30 year bonds that were issued in 1991 at 8.1% are to be retired this year. What happens then? Will the bond holders get cash? What will they do with it? The country is awash in money. Banks are giving it away to get people to open debit accounts. Residential mortgages are at 3.5%. In our neighborhood, someone bought a house appraised at $284,000 for $365,000 in February and then sold it two months later for $499,000.
The myth that money is worth something has been challenged since 2000. The crash of 2008 did not rehabilitate it. If people will not spend, there are no profits to be made. The Administration is looking to cancel student loans for teachers and other public service workers. Will they spend the extra money? Four decades of deprivation have taught people that governmental programs are not to be trusted.

    1. Most will reinvest in new Treasury bonds. Some will invest in other things. A few may take the cash and spend it, but that's the exception. As a rule, organizations that invest in 30-year Treasury bonds are looking to spand the interest, not the principle.

    2. I am reminded that not long ago the UK recalled its "perpetual" bonds, which had been issued when Victoria was Queen and Empress.

  6. I forgot to say this morning that the air is the clearest it has been in ages; AQI wss 40-something this morning, now (5PM) a little over 50. In the morning I could see what looked like a little smoke hanging over the mountains.

    listener--note above.

    1. Well now, that's a full day.

Ours are scheduled for the 16th.

And d'y'know what? When we got the 1st and 2nd doses of the Covid vaccine from the State clinic, the nurses used super thin needles and it was smoooooth. Getting the booster from CVS we noted they used a regular sized needle. OW.

Gee, can't wait to get the flu shot now. Heh.

    2. I also visited the post office and got some non-Rx medicine at Costco--they were all pretty close together.

  8. Wil is nearly through the rye with the booster. He didn't have it as rough as did I, but much worse than his 2nd dose. We are glad this is nearly behind us.

  9. NYT: Biden to Restore THREE National Monuments in Utah and New England [Click] Bears Ears, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and Northeast Canyons and Seamounts. One oddity:

The new boundary of Bears Ears will actually incorporate one element of the Trump-era boundaries. When the Trump administration reduced the overall size of the monument by nearly one million acres, it also added 11,200 acres that had not been previously protected. The new boundaries will restore the original Obama-era boundary and will include the additional 11,200 Trump-era acres.
