Fun! I just bought a pair of Bernie Mittens to use over my gloves when I'm outside a long time in cold weather. And! I sent a pair to our nephew, whom we kind of adopted two years ago, when his mom died (after his dad had died). His birthday is Sunday.

We had a light frost this morning, sky is clear and beautiful, no wind to speak of. Rain to recommence late this evening. To judge from the weather reports, Bill seems likely to be having some weather.
ReplyDeleteStill snowing here. Don't know how much so far but prediction was for 9".
DeleteClouds thickening here.
DeleteIt snowed off and on all day here, a thin, fine snow. The forecast is for two to five inches by morning, though I'm betting on closer to two.
DeleteCovid is teaching the Tories basic social democracy – but they won't learn [Click] “They can see that Britain’s shocking inequality needs addressing, but the solutions go against their true instincts.” A seemingly insightful analysis of UK politics, not without analogies to the US. (It overlooks the UK’s huge problem with alcohol abuse, seemingly shared by all classes.)
ReplyDeleteGetting all caught up on my vitamins. Good feeling. Only a few more to go. Bless Amazon. Don't rightly know just how I got out of so many at one time.
ReplyDeleteMy apologies for posting so many items together, but we slept kind of late, and need to get some prunings into the trash bins soon.

ReplyDeletePat Leahy being evaluated at hospital

My first thought was to suspect Trumpers doing voodoo.
DeleteGood thing I don't actually believe in voodoo.
DeleteUPDATE via CNN:
Delete"Sen. Dick Durbin, the second highest-ranking Senate Democrat, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Tuesday evening that Leahy could be back in the chamber Wednesday.
"Pat Leahy's wife, Marcelle, is a nurse, and she's with him, and this was just an abundance of caution," Durbin said. "He was feeling uncomfortable, as you mentioned, so they wanted to give him a trip to the hospital so they can watch him for a little while. She says things are going well, so we have all got our fingers crossed he will be back tomorrow."

He ain't no spring chicken; abundant caution is very reasonable.

I scheduled a post for 1:00 A.M. tomorrow and bumped Listener's regularly scheduled post to 1:00 P.M. Not that you'll have any difficulty telling which is mine and which is hers. Mine is, shall we say, slightly more flamboyant.
ReplyDeleteAll about the filibuster, the Senate standing rules, precedent, etc. etc. etc. [Click] It’s all very complicated.
ReplyDeleteThe other night I caught the end of Chris Cuomo's discussion with Tom Dashel, just in time to hear the senator lament that he wished they would go back to the filibuster as it existed when he was in the Senate. I gather it has become very convoluted since then.
DeleteThe article Alan provided really provides clarity and detail. But it didn't address what might happen if you really forced the minority to talk and keep talking. See who gives up first, as used to happen. It just takes the 60-vote rule as a fixed part of Senate culture.

ReplyDeleteThe Political-Reform Movement Scores Its Biggest Win Yet— in Alaska [Click] I hadn’t given it much attention, but that IS quite an accomplishment— a jungle primary combined with ranked-choice voting in the general. Combine that with reapportionment by neutral commissions rather than legislators and the national popular vote compact, and US politics would be upended— in a nice way, I dare think.
ReplyDeleteOh, and today I saw two good ideas for facemasks. At the grocery store there was another shopper, a nurse, who was wearing a home-made cap with buttons on the sides to hitch ear loops onto, sparing her ears the irritation of wearing the standard sort of mask all day long. And I saw a video out of Australia of a type of mask made in versions that accommodate turbans, hijab, and beards--the crux is large horizontal loops that go around the back of the head or headgear (like the old N95 medical masks I generally use), bigger if necessary to cover large beards and mustaches.
ReplyDelete"bigger if necessary to cover large beards and mustaches" would be clearer if I said:
