We planned to Zoom with Root*Center*Son, who lives alone. He said he’d text me when he got home from kayaking and we could Zoom around 9 or 10pm.
9pm and no word. 9:45pm I texted to ask if he was still up for Zooming. No response to texts or iPhone or email. By 10:30pm we were in the car driving the 50 min to his house.
Happily, his car was there with kayak on top, and he was sound asleep on his couch. We didn’t wake him. We simply drove home and sent him a text, letting him know we’d gotten home safely.
He called a short while later all apologies. It’s good that he knows we’d notice and come looking for him. And we’ve asked him for a little map to the parking places of all his favourite kayaking places.
In Vermillion Parish, southwest of Lafayette on the Louisiana coast, the sheriff’s office had a clear warning and a grim request for residents who did not leave:
Those choosing to stay and face this very dangerous storm must understand that rescue efforts cannot and will not begin until after storm and surge has passed and it is safe to do so. Please evacuate and if you choose to stay and we can’t get to you, write your name, address, social security number and next of kin and put it [in] a ziplock bag in your pocket. Praying that it does not come to this!
OHIO: As of Thursday afternoon, there have been at least 118,828 confirmed or probable cases in the state, 4,076 deaths, and 13,150 hospitalizations, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
We're supposed to get the remnants of Laura tomorrow.
You should be okay (I hope) as the center is allegedly going through KY and WVA instead of OH. Look out puddle, but it shouldn't be worse than a bad rainstorm by then.
My pleasure, Bill. It's interesting, if still quite a mess. Things ought to be well enough worked out by the time President Biden takes office [ahem] that he can move quickly and to good effect.
I read somewhere that the number of people in the US who have died of COVID-19 during the GOP convention is greater than those who died in the 9/11 attacks.
Laura...

^ Occum’s Razor still holds true!
DeleteBTW, When we were hanging up, and he was still sounding sheepish, I said, “Don’t lose any sleep over it.”

Have you considered having him chipped? [ducks]
DeleteGreat idear. 😂

ReplyDeleteWhite supremacists and militias have infiltrated police across US, report says [Click] “A former FBI agent has documented links between serving officers and racist militant activities in more than a dozen states.” I don’t think this is really news.
ReplyDeleteBBC report indicates Hurricane Laura not as bad as feared; it weakened and changed course a bit at landfall. [Click]

DeleteNew York attorney general probes perplexing Trump Tower Chicago loan deal. This reminds me of Trump's maneuvering re his Atlantic City properties in the 1990s. Except that debt forgiveness did not create taxable income in the 1990s and it did in 2012.
ReplyDeleteAbbott is launching a $5 rapid COVID-19 antigen test — with results in 15 minutes. I recall Abbott had a previous rapid test that was pulled because it wasn't accurate enough. I hope this one is better.

ReplyDeleteI have set up a small weekly contribution to Joe Biden now that it will _officially_ go to help him bet Trump rather than win the nomination.
