History Will Judge the Complicit [Click] “Why have Republican leaders abandoned their principles in support of an immoral and dangerous president?” An excellent analysis; long, but the subject requires that. The author finds convincing analogies to our present condition in Vichy France and in the Soviet satellites of eastern Europe.
The weatherperson changed his/her mind. Upper 90's tomorrow, then 102, then 106, then back down into the 90's, then into the 80's for a while. I think we had three days in the 80's and low 90's--very nice for here.
He is actually a very decent human being. We disagree on some policies, but I prefer him to some Dems who don’t have as much integrity. He will probably be elected to a third term come November. He is not actively campaigning or fundraising, but is accepting donations but, well, he has a two hour news conference in TV and radio three times per week. Ha! It’s a pity, because the person running against him is a great Progressive, who is the current Lt. Gov. But he’s getting very little press coverage by comparison.
The power of crowds [Click] An extended piece on crowd dynamics. Interesting. There was one photo of police on horseback pushing through a crowd. It always interests me that people in crowds don’t retaliate by flapping clothing in the faces of the horses—probably too few of them know that it will excite and bewilder the horses.
An 18-Year-Old’s Family Restaurant Burned to the Ground. Supporters Are Pitching in to Rebuild It. [Click] When 18-year-old Hafsa Islam saw her family’s Bangladeshi Indian restaurant burned to the ground during protests in Minneapolis, she shared the news on Facebook and posted her father’s thoughts: “Let my building burn…Life is more valuable than anything else. We can rebuild a building, but we cannot give this man [George Floyd] back to his family.” Her posts were met with an outpouring of support so vast and news coverage so wide that solidarity turned into nationwide pledges to rebuild her restaurant.
Title [Click] “New fencing has been erected at the north edge of Lafayette Square, adding to the sense of a fortress White House,” the New York Times reports. I am reminded of how in WWII Japan achieved one victory after another, each one closer to Tokyo than the one before. From El Paso to the White House is about two thousand miles. At that rate The Paramount Leader ought to be on his plane heading into exile.
Re the Ohio Bill to make it harder to vote. The Republicans must REALLY be wetting their pants in fear. Gerrymandering is so extreme it has kept the Republicans in control of Ohio for YEARS. It is finally dawning on them that their reprehensible behavior toward the people has made many angry enemies and that gerrymandering may no longer be enough to keep them in power.
The protestors are not the problem. The unleashed brutality of the police is the real problem. In different places they have caused two women to lose the babies they were carrying. In one case by shooting the woman in the stomach with a rubber bullet (which are far more lethal than the word "rubber" would suggest). In the other case they actually knocked a visibly pregnant woman to the ground and STOMPED ON HER STOMACH. At least three people have lost an eye because the cops are firing this rounds directly at their faces which is exactly how they are NOT to be used. I didn't trust the police before, but now I have a raging HATE for them. Oh, and in some cases cops kneel for a photo op and when that's over they get back on their feet and start spraying the crowd with tear gas. Yeah, raging hate for them.
Several memes saying the same thing on Facebook. In 2020 trump has brought you the 1918 flu epidemic, the 1929 Depression and the 1968 Race War all at the same time.
And he has gutted the government so that he has far less ability to exert control than his predecessors had--even if he had the intellect to do it. Does he remind anyone else of Ferdinand Marcos?
