On the way home...

  1. Notes on the last thread!

We had 6 yr old Grandson and 4 yr old Granddaughter overnight last night. Plus we had 16 month old Granddaughter some of the time yesterday and today. Then tonight we had play rehearsal with the three oldest Grands! They are going to be putting on a play (with Grandad who wrote the play, and some help from an Uncle) at our family gathering on Thanksgiving Weekend. Only, Uncle and one Grand live an hour from us (in different directions) and the other two Grands live in Maine. Thankfully there is one teen (age 13) among us, as she quickly conference called us all together on FaceTime! Ha! Did I mention that the three of them (two sisters and a cousin) practice the play every day after school via FaceTime?! Pretty impressive when you consider that the play is in Shakespearean language and the three are ages 13, 12 and 10!!!

    1. Anyway, this is to say that I'm super tired and about to hit the hay. And I'm gonna sleep 'til I wake up naturally!

    2. Oh, we heard that the 4 yr old was asleep in less than 10 min after they left for home and did not wake up when carried up to bed. Plus, the 6 yr old went up to bed and before his Daddy (our Youngest) went to say goodnight he was sound asleep on his bed, fully clothed and cuddling their cat...who elected to cuddle there for an hour or so. Pretty funny!

  2. You may have guessed, but did you know, that DT has heart disease? He underwent an unannounced, unscheduled 2 hr exam at Walter Reed on Saturday.

    1. Atherosclerosis; it is to be expected. The question is the severity, but the precipitate nature of the trip to Walter Reed certainly raises suspicion. Maybe he had a bout of angina? Ah, it's just fake news, Dear Leader; nothing a few more cold mass-produced hamberders won't take care of. A little hair off the dog, you know.

    2. He must have had quite a scare to go in voluntarily. Don't s'pose he's scared enough to call off his reelection campaign? *sigh* Didn't think so.

  3. With 100% of precincts reporting, Edwards beat Rispone for Governor of Louisiana 51.3% to 48.7%. Close, but not nearly as close as it was looking last night.

Bernie Sanders' message increasingly resonates with Latino voters [Click] “As growing numbers of Latinos are voting, Sanders has gained their support in California simply by outworking the competition.” Sounds very hopeful. I will readjust my political contributions today.

    1. There's a lot to be said for just showing up. It is often appreciated. I'm beginning to regret buying those Warren T-shirts. Now that it's cold, I should check out Bernie's online store to see if he has any sweatshirts.

    2. I see there is a zip hoodie.

    5. The Democratic Socialists of America doesn't have any hoodies or sweatshirts, but they do have Bernie apparel (with a red background). The Party For Socialism and Liberation has no apparel in their online store. Ditto the Socialist Rifle Association.

The group advocates for a left-wing advocacy for Second Amendment gun-rights.”

  6. Mayor Pete said some stupid stuff, like Medicare for All will impose others' values on you. I admire his linguistic ability, but he is way, way too corporate for my taste. Elizabeth wants to wait until the THIRD YEAR of her first term to do anything about Medicare for All. Remember that little ERA thing that we STILL haven't passed after forty years? Waiting is a boondoggle and I'm way past "waiting". Biden needs to stay home and play his record player at night. The rest of them are pretty much zeroes for me. I'm still Bernie or Bust. I sincerely hope none of the others are given the nomination because it would be really hard for me to vote for them. And we don't need Obama, who once was "Hope and Change" chiming in to tell us not to be so LEFT. Also rumored that Bill and Hillary are telling Tom Perez not to let the party go for Bernie.

    1. Pete does not have a good relationship with black residents of South Bend. And to say at that women of color conference in Texas that he favored permanent loss of voting rights for people convicted of felonies was REALLY out of touch. It beggars belief, but he was evidently unaware that was a big problem for them. Really dumb for such a bright young guy. How could he read the news and not know that? He ought to crash and burn in South Carolina, if not sooner.

    2. Susan, check out the Green candidate, Howie Hawkins. IMO he's a good fallback position if Bernie doesn't get the nomination, as I'm afraid he won't. What Alan just said confirms my suspicion that the DNC is still firmly Clintonista.

    3. I liked Mayor Pete more before he started saying that kind of stuff. It feels calculated to appeal to the nervous people who feel we need to go middle of the road.

When I read the headline about what Obama said, I was annoyed, but I saw a comment saying that what Obama actually said was more nuanced than the headline suggested. And that wouldn't surprise me. But I haven't been able to make myself go read the actual article, so I guess I really don't have an informed opinion on this.

  7. I have adjusted my recurring contributions to Warren and Sanders via ActBlue. It is a bit of trouble that one must delete a recurring contribution and start another one; the amount per donation can't be adjusted. Oh, well. Now to go look up Howie Hawkins.

    1. That has been a gripe of mine for years. There are lots of times you might want to adjust the amount. Oh well, I guess we can't have everything.

  12. I'm not on Twitter but this was posted on Facebook from the Twitter account of Rachel R. Gonzalez:

"Yesterday Pete Buttigieg put out a list of 400 Black South Carolinians what endorse him/his plan.
-A lot of the people are confused because they didn't endorse.
-42 percent of the list is white.
-They used stock photos from Kenya.
Yet we have heard nothing from his campaign."

    2. Well, here it is on Slate. [Click] They trace the story back to The Intercept which I don’t know anything about. If it is on the up-and-up, the right-wing web sites of course will be all over it.

    3. Well, the story has found its way into the Washington Examiner and Huffpost. I think we can expect due diligence from them.

    4. There are reports that the Buttigieg campaign is trying to "explain" and excuse it; that is unforgivably stupid. The only way to put something like that in the rear view mirror is to [metaphorically] take a fall guy out behind the barn and shoot him.

    1. Current report is four dead, six wounded. I worked at the old county hospital for five years, before its business was stolen by Fresno Community Hospital, in cahoots with the Board of Supervisors. When victims of such an incident were received at the county hospital they were given fake names (to be changed after they were discharged) so that even in the very unlikely event that someone got into the hospital to finish the job, they would have great difficulty finding their target--because the workers wouldn't know. Security was very good at the county hospital; one of the first things Community cut [way] back on was security. [Housekeeping was another.] I have visited patients at Community Hospital and observed little security during the day and none [yes, none] in the evening. The county hospital was making money, and was a good place to work. Community Hospital was absolutely infamous as a workplace, and I have no reason to suspect it has changed. One got to see a lot of things at the county hospital that you would never see at typical hospitals; it was a Level One trauma center, and some months it had the busiest ER in the entire state. They had various sorts of emergency drills; there was a minimum of one surgical suite fully staffed at all times, and I think their training objective was to have four operating rooms fully staffed in 15 minutes--which often meant before the first ambulance arrived. I remember going outside one night to get some fresh air; there were two helicopters on the landing pads, and three hovering in place waiting to land. No panic. Gurney crews were heading for the ER with the patients from the first two helicopters, and the gurney crews for the next three helicopters were standing by outside the landing pads fence. There was a security guard ready to open each gate and door the gurneys had to pass through to get into the ER. That was the first and only hospital I ever worked in where I saw a patient survive after having twenty units of blood poured through him/her--sometimes they even survived more than thirty units. I remember the young man--evidently an OK fellow, just in the wrong place at the wrong time--who was shot through the heart (over near Community Hospital) and survived because of the expert care he got at the county hospital. (Granted, if the bullet's path had been half an inch one way or another he probably wouldn't have made it.) One can live off that sort of thing for a long time, let me tell you. (As if you couldn't guess.)
Oh--the county hospital also had a neonatal intensive care ward; that's special. And a burn ward--also special.
