The Mad River

During Hurricane Irene this river flooded so high
that even the grass in the foreground was well underwater.

  1. Notes on the last thread.

Wednesday was a big GRAND day, and Thursday is another. On Friday we’re headed to Maine to visit half our grandchildren!

  2. Just saw in the Tribune that Tim Ryan has dropped out of the race. I'd really been hoping for that -- it will help clear my inbox. I think he had been sending more fundraising emails than anyone else.

  3. I was just reading about those fires in Calfornia coupled with very high winds and low humidity; Jeez. But one wouldn't know it here--nice weather, just a slight breeze and not hot. There might be a bit of smoke in the sky--but that could be due to other things as well--dust from almond harvesting, for instance.

    1. I’m always relieved to hear you're okay. I know enough people in Cali that I expect to hear a concern at some point. A dear friend’s daughter lost her California home several years ago to fire. She just made it out. I find it terrifying.

    2. That stuff about hurricane-force winds in certain areas is scary. But just as with earthquakes, there are measures that can be taken to make houses very fire resistant. There is a good standard for housing construction in the urban-forest interface, although I don't know that a lot of areas have made it mandatory for new construction.
