Third Sunday of Advent

  1. After the DNA debacle, Elizabeth Warren’s outreach to minority communities makes a pivot [Click] It seems she made a foreign policy speech, too. I want to hear from Warren and O’Rourke about foreign policy, not that I think most voters will consider that important.

    1. Ask and ye shall receive: Elizabeth Warren in Foreign Affairs [Click] VERY, VERY GOOD! IMO.

Here are a couple of links to Beto’s policies (the second seems the better):
Beto O’Rourke policies and platform [Click]

      Wikipedia [Click]
These do not seem to be in the same league as Senator Warren.

  2. When Americans want to understand Brexit, it’s clear Britain is in trouble [Click]

Ultima Thule ETA New Year’s Day! [Click] The New Horizons space probe has power enough to continue operating for twenty years, so Ultima Thule may not be the last object it surveys.

  3. Thanks, Alan. I'll come back to read all this. BTW according to Reuters TV news digest, it looks like the U.S. is headed for recession in 2019. Considering the legal quicksand Pres. Fart is in, a recession might just be the last blow he needs to send him under...I hope!

On a totally unrelated note: My fiftieth quiz has gone up at Fun Trivia, my first ever in the Sports category, on the amateur career of Torvill and Dean. And, to my amazement and delight, it was selected as an Editor's Choice, a very prestigious award in Quizzyland. So, I'm over the moon! Still, though, gotta finish my quiz on The Jungle Book for Kyle's Great Disney Long Haul. Promised him it would be submitted by the middle of December. Barring unforeseen emergencies, I should be able to get it submitted this evening or tomorrow at latest.

  4. Cat--Glad you like them, and congratulations!
P.S.: I rather liked the DNA stories I posted yesterday--from pine tar and parchment.

  5. Me, too, Alan. But it was birch tar, lol!

But yanno, I really wish science would take a good long look at greed, and curing it before it kills us all. It seems to be one of those orphan diseases.

  6. I was reading about birch tar pits being found on a large scale in Scandinavia that date from the time of the Viking expansion. (It's great stuff for waterproofing boats.) Birch (and pine) tar (or pitch) come from destructive distillation of wood, which would give charcoal as a valuable side product. A definitely different product from asphaltum.

Boston Globe: Elizabeth Warren tackles race issues on road to potential presidential run [Click] Rev. William Barber and Al Sharpton have spoken well of her. Hmmmm. At least two thirds of the votes will have been cast in the California primary before the South Carolina occurs, starting the same day as the Iowa caucuses. So any candidate who fails to campaign in California early on is taking a huge risk. Social media may make it more affordable, though. Hmmmm…..

  7. Reading up on Beto O'Rourke, I found that he is a member of the House New Democrat Caucus, which I consider disqualifying. Nice enough young man, but I don't want yet another New Democrat in the White House; I had bellyful of them a long time ago. But you all know my eccentricities.
