Just found this quote from Mahatma Gandhi that so applies to the current day:
"You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil. A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul."
Mah*Sweetie was told at work this week that they will no longer be paid for overtime. This, in a company that works with offices such that some of their work must be done off-hours. They say he can take "comp-time, when it's convenient for the company." That's bad enough, but what's really bothering Mah*Sweetie is that the company is still charging the customer extra for those hours, as if they have to pay their workers more. If he weren't so near to retirement and/or had other options, he'd move on. He's now just trying to figure out how to survive this without exploding.
I think I had better not read him that quote. I told him that doing his best at this point is for his own sake and the sake of the customer, not the company. I wish I could win the lottery, so he could retire and give them a piece of his mind on the way out. But given that I never buy a ticket ...
His fury is totally justified, especially as it's on top of last year's big 1% raise, after he worked a LOT of overtime on a huge project that brought in a ton of money for the company.
Corporations have the upper hand right now. But that will not always be so. I've been thinking about this. Our nation was founded by people who left other countries. Some were seeking freedoms. But others had been thrown out or were soon to go to jail when caught. It seems that group has the power right now. But our day is coming.

DeleteHere's another reason I like Quartz: The GOP tax bill is a massive victory for globalization. A little-noticed provision lets companies keep their profits in tax havens so long as the build factories overseas.
