Contrasts

  1. Howard would be first! (again!)

Can't recall a time when the weather has played as large a part in my life: how I am, how I feel, where I go, when, as it has the last couple of years. As if a bit player moved to center stage and is over riding/out shouting Lear. . . .

    1. What an excellent description! Poignant!

  2. Renee: While working on something else I came across a description of Adderall and its side effects. As I expected, one of the side effects is insomnia. But another is, "talking more than usual, feelings of extreme happiness or sadness" -- in other words, the symptoms of bipolar disorder. I can't help but wonder whether the Adderall is the principle source of the problem.

  3. We dodged the worst of the storms today, as the big wind and lightning slipped off to our SE. Over 100 reports of storm damage here in the Northeast, including a tornado up in the top corner of Maine. Wildness.

Sooo sad about the three weather researchers killed in an F3 tornado in Oklahoma City! These weren't thrill-seeking storm chasers, but seasoned researchers, one of whom was topin the field and had created stellar methods for getting readings from tornadoes (think of the movie: Twister!). They got caught by a rain-wrapped (hard to see) tornado that was moving erratically. A Weather Center van was picked up and rolled multiple times, as well, but the driver "only" got broken bones and will recover.

Weather instability kills. That's reason enough to pay attention to climate change.

  4. This weekend I read a dandy Andre Norton story from 1957: Star Born [Click for a selection of free downloadable versions]

    1. Besides simply being a good story, "Star Born" is notable for the multiplicity of themes that are blended into a coherent whole.

P.S.: Saturday night = Sunday morning was pretty rough at the hospital; but I took a good nap after work and before driving home, so I could drive safely. To bed at 10:00 PM tonight for sure.
