    1. I could easily have slept till noon--Thankful and I talked till three--but twas not to be. Got a wake-up call from a crew called The Federation for American Immigration Reform (a group labeled as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center) wanting me to press my congress critters for Rubio's reform bill. Weirdest part was the caller had a very heavy accent, likely Spanish. Told him I was sorry, and put the phone down and came down to check the IDs while I was still awake.

    2. Not sure why you think that was weird. The bipartisan immigration reform bill you're talking about is generally considered the best chance we have for getting something accomplished and is generally supported by Latinos.

Although if by "Congress critters" you specifically mean Representatives, that would be a mite weird. The bill that Rubio and the other 7 (Including Dick Durbin) wrote is specifically a Senate bill. A different "Gang of Eight" (including Illinois Congressman Luis Guitterez) is working on a similar but separate House bill.

  2. Bill, this:

At the center of the Tanton web is the nonprofit Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the most important organization fueling the backlash against immigration. Founded by Tanton in 1979, FAIR has long been marked by anti-Latino and anti-Catholic attitudes. It has mixed this bigotry with a fondness for eugenics, the idea of breeding better humans discredited by its Nazi associations. It has accepted $1.2 million from an infamous, racist eugenics foundation. It has employed officials in key positions who are also members of white supremacist groups. Recently, it has promoted racist conspiracy theories about Mexico's secret designs on the American Southwest and an alternative theory alleging secret plans to merge the United States, Mexico and Canada. Just last February, a senior FAIR official sought "advice" from the leaders of a racist Belgian political party.

    1. It would be weird indeed for that group to urge you to press your Congresspeople to *pass* immigration reform. I'm wondering if you may have heard the name wrong.

    2. I suppose that's possible. He woke me up. I didn't stay on the line for a second verification, but the lead in was pure Lou Dobbs. . . . And I came down immediately to check while it was still fresh in ma brain.

    3. The lead-in plus the fact they specifically mentioned Rubio, only one of 8 authors, suggests they may have somehow thought the were calling a Republican. Perhaps a Cuban-American, since they are often Republican.

  3. That's a lousy way to wake up, puddle. My sympathies!
