puddle ~~ Who actually mde the modem. i've never had a Dell computer, but in all the computers I've had the modem has been mde by a third party. Maybe if you went to the manufacturer's web site you could find a driver.
As nearly as I am able to tell: Dell actually makes the modem from Conexant parts. Conexant warns that the mfgr's make make changes that make the generic drivers they link to not work. Or worse. The other modem, the one I like better (it's drivers weren't disabled by Win7) is made by Rosewill, and marketed by Newegg. It's on sale right now for $15.
Also looking into a Trendnet one, which has pretty good reviews. . . http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825134008 Also like the fact that it actually makes *sounds* when it dials -- can't tell you how often I could detect when earthlink software was lying (remote computer doesn't answer, because I could tell it had *never* dialed in the first place. . . Allowed me to go looking for other problems, lol!)
Back at home, getting some stuff caught up, relaxing a good bit, and enjoying the food I am accustomed to. Barring instructions to the contrary, I am off to San Diego tomorrow/today (Sunday) afternoon.
Is this sort of thing important enough to at least complement conventional polling?
I gave up on trying to find my old crushable broad-brimmed travel hat, the likes of which I can truly use in San Diego. Just had time to make it to a sporting goods store that had a whole ONE size that I could wear. Cut out the elastic in the headband, cut off the thing to keep it from blowing off, and we're good to go (at least until it gets washed and shrinks).
Beautiful moderate summer day out there. Nancy came down to mow the road (I personally like it wild, but hey. . . . ), and I headed up to the garden: two bags -- one of weeds for her chickies, and SIX cukes. She lurvs cukes, so I gave her four of the six.
I seem to be discerning a pattern with the modems -- they work pretty well, when I first start, and decline as I keep surfing. I checked to see (bless google), and it turns out that it IS an issue. So going to try getting another one or two of the one I like best (and is also the cheapest of the two) and swap them out every six hours or so. Am having to reboot that often anyways. . . . I remember from one of my old computer boards a couple of techies that kept their hard drives in the freezer. . . . may try that, too, lol!
Howard's da boy!!
ReplyDeleteLeft a note on the last thread, which I couldn't post earlier (up 'cause of leg cramps -- waiting for calcium and magnesium to work their magic!)
