Why we don't take these March storms too seriously...

  1. Howard's first!

Love the picture AND the caption! Have to laugh though: I first read it as the robin speaking ~~ "Why, we don't take these March storms too seriously..." Looked again, and the comma really wasn't there, which changes everything, eh?

  2. Pork meatloaf sounds good, puddle. Ground turkey might be too. Back when I was economizing considerably on food (during graduate school), I found in the pet food section of the local neighborhood supermarket (well, it was super then) canned mackerel for a very reasonable price. I looked carefully at the label, and it didn't say anything about pet food, so I gave it a try. Made great fish(meat) loaf; very tasty. I don't recall, but suppose I mixed it with some sort of starch. I put ketchup on top, of course. Anyway, I ate it regularly for some months, then one day it was missing from the shelf. After a moment's thought I went around to the canned fish section, and there it was next to the canned tuna for three times the price it had been in the pet food section...

  3. P.S.: "regularly" doesn't mean every day--maybe once a week or so. It was cheap high-protein food.

  4. There's a wonderful scene in Getting Straight where the grad students (Eliot Gold for one) were making catsup soup in the school cafeteria. Loved the movie, but that scene stuck because I *was* in graduate school at the time. . . .

I've made mackerel patties (and salmon patties) with just egg as a binder. I like the salmon a good bit better, but the mackerel isn't bad at all -- and IS a good bit cheaper, for sure. They're both in my back up stores and me and the cat have shared. . . . Get mine at Family Dollar, where they go for half of what they do at the "super" market. . .

The meat loaf was terrific, btw, and had a whole lot less fat to drain off than regular hamburger. Imagine that.

AND: *Loved* the angel couple. And the statue. And the church itself.

  5. Lol! Mike just picked up my car and left his truck. My wonderful watchdog, now that the car's gone, is barking up a storm. Not a single *peep* while it was happening, grin. . . .

He obviously thinks the truck doesn't belong there and should get out of the yard *immediately*! Smile

  7. Hi guys.

This week I submitted a story to Daily Science Fiction and a quiz to Fun trivia. Just saw a cryptic message about the quiz saying that so n so needed to ask a question. When this problem is fixed I can put your quiz online. But there was no question. Wrote back to the message sender requesting clarification. She'll probably think I'm an idiot, but what can you do?

Finished The Thin Man at about8:00 AM this morning and then slept till about 4:00. Not feeling terribly chipper, which may be why I didn't understand the message at Fun trivia.

  8. Well, the water project was a failure. Something wrong with the pump (it sez inspect brushes regularly, but I haven't a klew). It was pumping poorly, making a whole lot of noise, and leaking from somewhere I couldn't determine. Worse. Mouses in the water tank. Not living. Have spent a whole lot of time disinfecting. Also a whole lot of mildew on the lid. Obviously need a better lid. (This one's a tad narrow from side to side. . . . Looks like I'll be using the other pump, which doesn't have as much lift, and doing it more often since it only gets the tank half full. Meanwhile, some buckets to the river exercise. (Never used the other pump, so need to get a tutorial from the kid.) I believe I've had more fun afternoons.

  10. OK, the editor kindly explained herself and, as I suspected, the problem was one of my obtuseness. I made the correction she requested and resubmitted. The editor indicated hat she would put it up once that correction was made, so I'm waiting for the notice now. Sure wish my fiction and poetry sales were so reliable.

  11. Should be: I finally have my doctor's apt. With a doctor I *like* and trust. I've done better in the past with nurse practitioners who, in general, are able to listen, and interested. This doc is amazing.

And thanks for the well wish.

  12. Wow! That was fast. The quiz is up now.

  14. Puddle, glad to hear about the doc apt. May it go well.

    Sorry about the pump!

  15. Sounds like fun. Hope you're feeling more chipperer soon.

  16. Thanks. Me too. I was hoping by tonight I'd be back out of worrying about water for a month. Not to be, I guess. At least I HAVE water, which is more than most of the world does, eh?

Just got back from dinner for Marc's birthday. Went to a near-by Greek restaurant we haven't been to in years because the first time we were there Penny didn't like her food. But everything was quite good this time. My wine was good too, and reasonable as wines go.

  22. Ah! I love Greek food. Never did *before* I went. But it's always been hard to find really good Greek restaurants here (being anywhere in the US). Iffin you found one, treasure it! Sounds like a good time was had by all, and wish him a Happy Happy from me!

  25. This is beginning to sound a little too much like a Sorcerer's Apprentice project!

Also, I couldn't help thinking how Anne of Green Gables it all sounded...especially the drowned mouse part.

Sure hoping you get a good water set up before too long. You need a rain barrel!

  26. Yum! What dish did you order?
And what wine is it that you liked?

  27. Ohhhh, I like it better your way!!

  28. Just thinking about the patterns of our lives, and how little they change over time. . . . eBaying, looking for long skirts and dresses in my new size, I was struck by how attracted I am to floral patterns on black backgrounds. Some ways into this project, it hit me that the very first piece of clothing I made when I learned to sew, and was allowed to pick out my own fabric was a circle skirt: bouquets of blue flowers on a black background. And I literally wore that skirt to rags ~~ and after Mama put it IN the rag bag, I retrieved it, smoothed it out, put it in a paper bag, and would take it to school and change into it. I was in sixth grade.

  32. I like floral patterns, preferably on a dark blue background, though black can be very nice too.
