  3. To clear the above up: I had gone to bed around nine, and woke at three 'cause Mr PuppyBaby wanted to go out.

And kiddles, don't fergit: tonight is FALL BACK night. Don't forget to set your clocks back before bedtime. I just did mine. Winter has arrived.

  5. Broke down and bought a backup Kindle, same model, before Amazon runs out of stock. Keyboard, free 3G as well as WiFi Internet, OK web browser, free shipping, no sales tax, $50 off for tolerating some very minor advertising, another $50 off (brings it down to $89) for taking out an Amazon credit card (which I will chop up into little tiny pieces when it arrives and never use online), plus $6 for the same sort of faux leather case I bought before, which is just fine. Price equals their new bottom-of-the-line model which has no browser, no keyboard, no 3G Internet.

Drying persimmons again--late in the year, but we got a lot of them for free. Will pick some of a different variety to give to friends this afternoon. Possibility of some rain tonight; weather cool today. Recuperating from Salt Mine No. 1 this morning, off to visit with Naomi Sunday afternoon, stay overnight and take care of court in Oakland Monday AM. And do some shopping in San Jose, and feed the ducks at Casa de Fruta on the way home.

  9. Let's hope that Ally remains HAMA negatove! Sounds good so far.

  10. I had lunch with the Caltech alumni group today. First time I'd met with the group. Previous things they've done I either had a conflict or they were happy hours and such that aren't my thing. Had a good conversation with a researcher who writes his own papers and was interested in what software I use to handle the references. And another guy is currently teaching a Great Books course on science fiction. He's going to mention to his class (because I told him about them) that there is a Chicago-area science fiction convention next weekend and that the World Science Fiction Convention will be in Chicago next Labor day weekend.

The group is going to a play about cloning next Saturday. Wish they hadn't scheduled it directly opposite the SF convention. But I should be able to get to the Christmas party on the 18th of next month.

  11. It beats sitting around drooling on my cane... and you are a fine one to talk!

  12. Yes indeed, the Ally news is good. And really, so are her questions--but what thoughts they raise. Something she probably can't understand for some time is that either or both of her parents would give their right arms--literally--if she could thereby be cured.

Bill--interesting to think about college alumni get-togethers. I've not done that sort of thing myself--I suppose because I didn't make any any long-lasting friendships or professional contacts there. Not much of a joiner ennyhoo.

Persimmons taken care of except for a delivery. Been avoiding some work that needs to be done this weekend, but I will get to it in the nick of time.

  13. One thing they could honestly say to Ally is that when they were little doctors didn't know how to do the treatments she's having!

  14. Demetrius is on the phone with his dad. Don't know anything yet.

  15. At least it's good he/they can talk. Keeping fingers crossed.

  16. Toes crossed too!

  17. Alan ~~ None of these were people I had known at Caltech. In fact, none of them had been there when I was. But the fact that we were all connected to science in some way gave us something in common despite differences in age that may have run to a half century or more.

  18. Apparently Metri's dad was on the bus in "the old neighborhood", and apparently it's common practice for young ruffians to target senior citizens around the time Social Security checks come out.

But at least it sounds like my father-in-law is going to be okay.

  19. I'm so glad. Wish everybody would go ahead and get direct deposit somewhere, so the 3rd wasn't a problem. It's actually the same around here. I'm too late, lol! I get mine the Wednesday of the same week in the month I was born. And it varies. Be nice if it were the same day every month though.

  20. The emotional effects of such an outrage could take a long time to heal. But to be patched up pretty well is good. Very good. If you don't mind me asking, how old is he? And certainly direct deposit is good.

  21. I tried what I thought might let me get to the candle page: deleted all the cookies and browsing history on Firefox and tried again. No luck. Can't figure out why I can't get in when nobody else has any problem.

  22. Such a relief that he's going to be okay!!!

This sort of thing happens more when the economy is bad and jobs are scarce. That doesn't excuse it. We need good police and good economy. Meanwhile, direct deposit would help greatly.

  23. puddle ~~ I thought it was the law that Social Security money *had* to go directly into the bank -- that people didn't have any choice in the matter any more.

And sinice different people get their money different weeks, it seems like it would be hard for ruffians to figure out who has just had their money deposited. Quite aside from whether any particular person has rushed to the bank to draw out cash. Young ruffians could asily see us seniors as vulnerable, but the business about targeting at a specific time doesn't make sense.

  24. As I understand it, direct deposit is encouraged but optional.

  25. I just checked. It's mandatory for anyone who enrolled in Social Security after April of this year and will become mandatory for everyone in March of 2013.
