  2. Got three loaves of bread in the oven, but stopping in to say "hi".

I'm tellin' ya..... Republicans are *trashing* Ohio. They just hate women, the poor, the elderly. They love racial profiling, forcing women to "pay" for having sex by not allowing abortion, keep their buddies/the corporations rolling in cash and making everyone else foot the bill. Can hardly bear to look at the news anymore.

Why is Karma so damn slow in coming around???

listener ~~ After our previous experience with vinyl, we never considered that. Although the big problem is that the construction was too flimsy for the size windows we have. No obvious problem with the tiny window they had in the showroom. But still, we wanted the sturdiest windows we could get, and that means fiberglass.

Of the two fiberglass brands we have looked at so far, Marvin Infinity is definitely the strudier. That's why it costs more, I'm sure. But there's a third brand we haven't checked out yet.

  5. I'm very interested to hear what you discover and decide, Bill. We have lots more windows that will need replacing if we ever get a better economy again. The one we replaced was a large "picture window" the size of three or four windows, so sturdy was vital. We also got some pretty wooden traceries made for the inside of the windows, which was very pricey, but we only needed it on that one window. Ours is wooden inside and fiberglass outside and we haven't had a single problem with the window...now going on two years.

  7. My big exciting news of the day is two fold:

    (1) I went to my mother-of-the-groom dress fitting today and that dress is gonna rock! My seamstress has the same first name as me ~ quite rare. It's a sleeveless dress and she's going to shorten the top half simply by reducing the length of the straps. That will mean the straps will veer more toward my shoulders. It's not an off the shoulder look, almost a boatneck placement (but with a V-neck, if you see what I mean). It nicely changes a deepish v neck into a sweetheart V-neck, which is much more my style. Then she's going to shorten the hem by an inch, so that it will fall at just the right place (just below the kneecap, to the length of the bend behind the knee). I am utterly tickled! To see it all in place like that, and see how great it looks on me..!! I was really surprised. I've lost 6 lbs since giving up sugar in February and now I'm beginning to reap the benefit of that. Sweet!!

    (2) So, back in May I lead a retreat for the Methodist clergy based on my experiences with a book by Martin Laird titled Into the Silent Land. Earlier this week I ordered his new book, due out in 29 days (but who's counting?) titled A Sunlit Absence. Both books come from Laird's depths as a person of deep contemplative prayer and knock the socks off anything I've read before. Well! Today I learned that he is offering a retreat in Seal Cove, Maine in October. It's going to cost more than a month's wages from the Library to go, and we are on an austerity budget and it will be a 9 hour trip each way. So it tells you a lot about how much I NEED, not simply want, to be present at this retreat that I've already signed up for it, even before talking it over with Mah*Sweetie...(who will wince at the cost then be totally supportive).

    A good day.

  8. I got the *nicest* message today from a woman who works in the shelter, thanking me for not making her have to put him down. I got tears in my eyes.

Penny is totally opposed to anything that has the least bit of wood in it. She wants something that is absolutely 100% maintenance free, and she is conviinced that wood, even inside, will always need maintenance.

She wanted casement windows above the sink. But because we're in a historic district (boo!), casements are only permitted if they can be made to look like double-hung, with a broad bar across the middle. That only comes in the model that is wood but aluminum-clad on the outside. So we're sticking with double-hung. But the new windows should be a lot easier to move up and dowh than the old ones are.
