  2. My feel bad for my areas trees is that the hemlocks are all dying. A nasty little critter called the woolly adelgid . . . Nothing much except outright poisoning of everything seems to work. It's moving north. I hope they find a benign way to kill it soon, before it kills every hemlock in America.

Since my property was selectively logged before I bought it, hemlocks are MOST of my trees. And I love them: they remind me in everything but sheer size of the coast redwoods.

Christina Tourin has a wonderful CD of harp music called "Prayer for the Living Trees" that I love. She was my daughter's harp teacher back in the day, and is now world famous for her Harp Therapy Program. She is a skilled harpist in both classical and folk, though she prefers folk. She used to play the concert harp up at the Von Trapp Lodge, back when Maria was still there.

She has one song just for the Redwoods. At the site you can listen to some of the music.

  4. It's snowing all day (so far). I'm really glad I got those de-icers in the birdbaths. I put out lots of seed too, and you should see the herds of birds out there! The Blue Jays are back too, though they're each a bit of a bully.

I got my room finished. I did pick the right color and I'm very happy with it. Next I'm working on my sewing room which has functioned far too often as the "quick!, stash it!, people coming!" room. At this point I can neither see nor walk across it, so I must return it to an operational state. I get really depressed if I can't get any sewing in. One of the blogs I read had a quote, "My soul is fed with needle and thread", and that's certainly true for me.

    listener, hope you feel better.

  5. She must have met the Redwoods. . . . I never thought that meeting a tree could be life changing, but it has been. Thanks for the link!

  6. No snow yet. Been threatening all day, but no flake in evidence. We didn't break freezing.

  7. What *was* the right color?

  8. The paint goes by the very unromantic name of "Cabbage Leaf", but it's a very light green, like the first baby leaves in Spring.

  9. puddle, are cranes a good symbol in China? I have one of those little tiny bamboo carvings under glass. It is trees and four cranes. I'd like to pass it along to a Chinese friend, but I don't want to do anything that might be taken the wrong way.

  12. My memory is that it's VERY good. But wanted to check, and found:

"Crane: There are four types of cranes in Chinese myth: White, yellow, blue and black. The black crane is thought to live the longest - up to 600 years. When a crane is shown among clouds it stands for longevity, widsom and nobility. When shown among pine trees, the crane symbolizes determination, wealth and power. When two cranes are shown together, it is the ultimate depiction of longevity. "

  13. Susan, the crane is a go.

The Crane is legendary in China for being the prince of all feathered creature on earth. Next to the Phoenix, the Crane is the most favored all Chinese bird symbols. The Crane is the ancient symbol for longevity because of its exceptionally long life span. In many legends, the spirits ride on cranes, which are also said to bear the souls of the departed to the heavens.

  16. Sen. Al Franken, D-MN is on C-SPAN speaking about NOT extending the Bush-era tax cuts.
He spoke well. I appreciated hearing it.

  17. We'll probably get the shaft anyway. Our government seems determined to feed the rich by starving the poor. Obama is not guiltless.

  18. I take 10,000. No known side effects up to that dosage.

  19. The Dem Senators sure said what needed to be said, though.
    I saw that on C-SPAN. It's worth a listen.
