First we need to cross the stream...

  1. People getting over their bugs is number one after Howard Dean and selling poetry!

CT scan went just fine, no reason to expect anything but more good news. They give one a honking big IV dose of contrast medium in a hurry (they use a mechanically driven syringe), and the first time it hurt. Not the second time or today.

We expected the local police would have been out catching quite a few drunk drivers over the long weekend, but no such luck; a moderate amount of work, but far from overwhelming. Tomorrow we will see what the Alameda County police agencies did...

Took my old leaky printer to the repair shop and it proved too expensive to repair. Repair couldn't be guaranteed to work, and would cost about as much as three replacement printers. Then Amazon cancelled my order for the new (US version) printer--the vendor didn't have any left. I sent an e-mail to my correspondent in Victoria (BC) asking if he could get me another. If it comes from Canada it's all ready to go for disc printing. If the customs tag indicates it's a present it goes right on through with no duty or import rigamarole.

  2. Alan, I'm glad for the good results on the scan! Yay! And yay on getting your new printer! Mine doesn't print anything anymore, so it's sitting under a footstool in the living room. Because it *does* still scan. So when I want to do a lot of scanning, it's worthwhile to drag it out and hook it up. Which isn't often, and meanwhile I have a huge hunka space on my desk which is put to much prettier use. . . .

listener, I hope you're on the mend!

Under the wing, next to the heart.

  3. Up early; need to get to town and back before dark, and then brace for the big rains overnight. Sweet, gray, and drippy as I speak. Trip mostly an egg trip: the hunters have eaten up all the more local eggs, lol! Campfires and bacon and eggs is my guess.

And even as I say that, I can feel myself trying to get out of having to go.

  4. Heh! Did not go. Not even thinking about going tomorrow. Maybe, just maybe, Thursday. . . .

Actually quite lovely today: the soft chatter of the rain/drips the whole of the day, the world outside the windows soft, gray. Mist laying between the ridges, all very fairytale stuff. Very winter landscape except that the grasses haven't bleached to pale gold yet, are still warm and ruddy.

  5. It's amazing what you can eat instead of eggs if you have the right motivation. ;-)

  6. BIG NEWS in Vermont!

Today Gov-elect Shumlin chose Doug Racine as his Secretary of the Agency of Human Services! Doug is the person I supported for Governor, who lost to Shumlin after the Recount by just 203 votes. When Doug was here at the house last week (to drop off the cooler we left in the campaign office in August) he told us he'd met with Peter Shumlin but wasn't sure how it would turn out. Peter plans to do things differently than Doug would have done things. So sometimes Doug's hands will be tied. But we Vermonters can feel assured, in my view, that nothing truly dangerous will happen, with Doug at the HS helm. He cares and certainly understands the issues, having been the Senate Chair of HHS most recently. He has made children and the needy a main concern throughout his time serving Vermont. He used to work for Leahy in DC, in Leahy's earlier days. It's good when former rivals patch things up enough to work together for the sake of the people.

I told Doug I wasn't taking my Racine for Governor sticker off the Mini until he was appointed Sec of AHS. :-) I guess I'll have to now.

  8. Oh man, I had a mizzzerable night last night trying to sleep while coughing up a storm and spitting up yellow crud. But today I am a lot better. I even got some housecleaning done, made a pumpkin pie and a big pot of soup. Of course, the motivation behind that is that Hubby was going downhill today with his cold and throat issues. That sparked the mother-instinct in me big time. I think it helped to get up and move around a bit more too.

We'll see how tonight goes. "Everything gets worse at night." One more day home, then we'll see whether my cough has quieted enough to take to work. It would be nice of the redness in my throat subsided too, but at least it feels less swollen!

I still sound like a frog! I don't know how I'd answer the phone or talk to patrons (without scaring them!). Hmmm.

  9. Congrats, sweetie! I meant to tell you I was passed on route 66 on T-day by a red mini. That might have matched the coat you didn't get. About three miles down the road, saw it pulled over by the blue lights. Imagine a mini getting a speeding ticket, lol!

  10. I always thought yellow was an improvement on green. Green's alive and growing; yaller's dead and going. . . .

  11. WONDERFUL NEWS, ALAN!! May it ever be so!! :-)

I'm sort of on the mend. Had a lousy night last night, but a more energetic day today, which is an excellent sign. I still can't talk and I still have 3 or 4 coughing fits an hour, and an occasional quadruple sneeze. And the throat is still sore, though not as swollen. Day by day. At least I'm not running a fever anymore. Looks like I'm going to live. ;-)

  12. If it's ever green I'm visiting the ER!

    Yellow signifies infection, though.

It's clear you want, or none.

  15. Today is a day I could have done without, although it could have been worse. Short story, computer won't turn on. Using a backup that's not quite my choice.

To make short story long: We had an hour's power outage middle of last night. (I turn my monitor off at night but leave my computer on to run distributed computer calculations such as SETI@home.) The UPS software didn't seem to be shutting the computer down, so, without turning on the monitor (mistake), I used the power button to turn the computer off. Only it immediately restarted. When I turned on the monitor the screen was asking me whether I wanted to start the computer normally or start it some other way. Since I didn't want to start it at all, I turned it off with the power button again. Only this morning the power button gave no response.

I'm entitled to on-site repair service, but you wouldn't believe how impossible it was to contact Gateway by phone. Finally I remembered that this computer should connect to the internet by our wireless home network (sort of comes with AT&T cable internet). So I've new managed to have a couple of e-mail exchanges with Gateway technical support.

  17. Ooops. Forget that I wouldn't be automatically logged in on this computer.

  18. Cruds and gremlins BEGONE! PRONTISSIMO!

Friend in BC found the printer I wanted on sale, $69.95; very good price (probably clearance). I asked him to get me two. Will see to it that something arrives on his doorstep--maybe a bottle of good BC absinthe. Research, you know.
