Priscilla is poorly again today. I'm afraid she may be in her final decline - she's definitely over ten, and in fact we figure she's around fifteen. Not that her age makes any difference in how we all feel about her, especially Dad.
Dad's waffling on taking her to the vet. Sis says, and she's probably right, that he's afraid to do so. After all, he took Campion to the vet, thinking he just needed some medicine, and they ended up putting him to sleep then and there. Come to find out, he was deathly ill and we never knew it. Dad was shattered.
I can't really blame him for figuring Priscilla will pull through this or she won't but, either way, she'll be at home with him.
Voting rights are dying by a thousand cuts Noah Feldman Syndicated columnist If you want to understand what’s happened to voting rights in the U.S. over the past decade, just take a look at the recent ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
That ultraconservative court took a substantial bite out of voting rights when it reversed its own precedent to hold that multiple groups, like Black voters and Hispanic voters, can’t team up to argue that a state has diluted their votes.
The holding is legally wrong, yet the Supreme Court could conceivably uphold it, because the decision reflects a long-term conservative strategy: undermining voting rights law one step at a time in relatively low-profile cases rather than through sweeping decisions that draw a public outcry. --nordy
Just got home from working at the polls. 15% turnout (largely uncontested races). 655 voters: 3 Progressive, 167 Republican, 485 Democrat. Howard Dean got a write-in vote. 😉
I love my town. One absentee ballot was returned with just a raw signature and not printed name. Rather than call it a spoiled ballot, our Town Clerk asked 9 of us to see if we could decipher the signature. I had the list of names of who had requested an absentee ballot. The middle initial was clear, but that was all. But! We narrowed it down to 5 people, based on the first letter being either B or R and the middle initial being M. Then! Someone remembered that a person in that grouping had had a stroke this year! So we all agreed it was that person, the ballot was counted, and the Town Clerk will call tomorrow and confirm with that person that they did indeed send their ballot in. Pretty amazing when you consider that some of the people present began their day at 4:00am!
Gee, cut the guy a little slack. Ten megabucks probably won't even pay off his lawyers, and won't even put a dent in his fines. But maybe it could be donated to, and put to good use by, the Overseer of the Poor. -----Alan
That's kind of a fancy bird house!

DeleteCat, I am so sorry. I've watched a large number of pets in their final decline, and it never gets any easier. --nordy
ReplyDeleteCome all of you good workers
ReplyDeleteGood news to you I'll tell
Of how the good ol' union
Has come in here to dwell
[Chorus]
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
[Verse 2]
My daddy was a miner
And I'm a miner's son
And I'll stick with the union
'Til every battle's won
[Verse 3]
They say in Harlan County
There are no neutrals there
You'll either be a union man
Or a thug for J. H. Blair
[Verse 4]
Oh, workers can you stand it?
Oh, tell me how you can
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man?
[Verse 5]
Don't scab for the bosses
Don't listen to their lies
Us poor folks haven't got a chance
Unless we organize
[Chorus]
Voting rights are dying by a thousand cuts

Bernie got a LOT of write-in votes. But as he was already on the Democratic ballot, I imagine a lot of Republicans wrote him in.
