    1. Why hasn't Joe Biden gotten credit for the roaring '20s economy? Because too many people are not benefitting from it. Too many people are struggling, choosing whether to pay the rent or the utilities, working two jobs and still not getting by. Biden's rosy statistics don't mean much to them. --nordy

  2. (AP) — The Republican National Committee on Friday launched a swing state initiative to mobilize thousands of polling place monitors, poll workers and attorneys to serve as “election integrity” watchdogs in November — an effort that immediately drew concerns that it could lead to harassment of election workers and undermine trust in the vote. -- nordy

    1. As someone who has been a poll watcher on more than one occasion, I can testify that these are not the normally expected effects. But recent Republican behavior does lead to concerns their poll watchers may act disruptively.

  3. Video: Solar smashes records in California; renewables frequently provide more than 100% of electricity needed. [Click]

This has been a long time coming— about 45 years. Back then, in the first administration of Governor Jerry Brown, it was estimated that in order to supply enough electricity California would have to build another SIX nuclear power plants, which would cost a mind-boggling amount of money, in addition to using huge amounts of water--- more than might be available. One of the first things California did was to change the way power companies’ income was regulated. Instead of allowing them to make more money as they generated more electricity, they were rewarded (or at least not punished) for generating less electricity while meeting their customers’ needs. (I forget the details.) That encouraged them to cooperate with a move to ever more efficient use of electricity. Quite some time ago (I haven’t checked lately), Californians’ electricity usage became comparable to that of Europeans, about half that of the US at large. The fossil fuel protagonists continue to moan (less frequently now) that Californians will be freezing in the dark; but it is in Texas that has happened. California now has only one remaining nuclear power plant [Diablo Canyon], and that won’t last forever.

[Note: when electricity prices were deregulated, Enron and other criminal enterprises gamed the system to make huge profits and drove up Californians’ power bills, but that was brought back under control.]
