I have long thought that modern computerized watches ought to be able to do the same thing.

    1. Another thing I find fascinating is that the Homo sapiens Y-chromosome displaced the ancient Homo neanderthalis Y-chromosome long before the extinction of Neanderthals--- likely while their ancestors were in Africa. At my age I will probably not live to see it, but discovery of Homo erectus remains in situ in India should be very informative. The argument has been made that all other types of humans are subspecies of H. eretctus rather than true species.

P.S.: As memory serves me, one partial skull cap that appears to be from Homo erectus has been discovered in India, washed down a river from somewhere upstream. But typical H. erectus hand axes have been found in several places.

  4. In Russian news (I failed to note the link) yesterday I saw that in response to boycotts of Russian gem-quality diamonds in the EU and E7, the Russian government has begun paying the miners to keep them employed.

  5. Thank you, Alan. I'm especially disheartened that the Biden Admin is allowing more bombs and jets for Israel! WHY!?!! Talk about insanity run amok.

    1. That may cost Biden votes that he can ill afford to lose.

    2. California will give all its electoral votes to whomever or whatever the national Democratic Party nominates, so voting third party out here makes no difference. Which goes a long way toward explaining why they don't campaign out here. Some other places, maybe not so much. So far this year the third party candidates in California seem to be a rum lot.

  6. Wil and I got our Covid boosters yesterday at 3:00pm (Pfizer). Went about our business with no symptoms, not even a sore arm. Lugged in flooring from the garage, I did 12 miles on the elliptical. Then, during the night, we both got mild flu symptoms. I had a fever of 99.5 and my upper arm really hurt! Better today. We were surprised, as we'd had no reaction at all to the dose we got on September 24th. So, I have to wonder if it really is exactly the same as before.

  7. Heather Cox Richardson's post last night is worth a full read

Not only do MAGA Republicans, including House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), parrot Russian talking points about Ukraine, but Russian disinformation has also been a key part of the House Republicans’ attempt to impeach President Joe Biden.

Republicans spent months touting Alexander Smirnov’s allegation that Biden had accepted foreign bribes, with Representative James Comer (R-KY) and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) calling his evidence “verifiable” and “valuable.” In February the Department of Justice indicted Smirnov for creating a false record, days before revealing that he was in close contact with “Russian intelligence agencies” and was “actively peddling new lies that could impact U.S. elections.”

On March 19, former Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas testified about the investigation into Biden’s alleged corruption before the House Oversight Committee at the request of the Democrats. Parnas was part of the attempt to create dirt on Biden before the 2020 election, and he explained how the process worked.

“The only information ever pushed about the Bidens and Ukraine has come from Russia and Russian agents,” Parnas said, and was part of “a much larger plan for Russia to crush Ukraine by infiltrating the United States.” Politicians and right-wing media figures, including then-representative Devin Nunes (R-CA), Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), The Hill reporter John Solomon, Fox News Channel personality Sean Hannity, and other FNC hosts, knew the narrative was false, Parnas said, even as they echoed it. He suggested that they were permitting “Russia to use our government for malicious purposes, and to reward selfish people with ill-gotten gains.”

    1. I remember our school lunches cost 25 cents--but in those days $3.50/hr was a good union wage, and 25 cents would also buy a dozen eggs (at the egg ranch, not the grocery store).

  10. Listener, I've been thinking a lot about Puddle lately. Here are the fruits of my thought. If you could run any or all of them by Cooter to see what he thinks, I'd appreciate it.

    · Would it be possible to bring in a DVD player and some of her trove of DVDs? I recall that The Waltons and Upstairs Downstairs were great favorites.

    · Would it be all right for me to send her some nightgowns? As terribly ill as my mother was, it helped her feel better to have new and pretty if simple, easily laundered nightgowns. No doubt her sisters have taken care of this, but please let me know just in case.

    · Check with the nursing staff if it’s all right to send the occasional sweet treat like fudge.

There’s a nagging sense in the back of my mind that I’m forgetting something that should be on the list. * shrug * Oh well, if it comes to me I’ll add it in the comments.
