  1. Have your kitties tested the new flooring yet, listener?

    1. Define "tested."

They have walked on it. They have been in mourning that we keep moving all the cushy places out of some favourite spaces, ripping out the nice, soft carpet and put down hard floors. They come through asking a LOT of questions. But once we began moving furniture INTO a room and they had a place to be in that room again, they began to be okay with it. So far they haven't barfed on the new flooring. But Spinnaker did barf on one of the rug runners we bought, before we had even unrolled it completely for the first time.

We've been giving them a lot of reassurance as needed, spending time with them each evening too.

    2. I should consider setting one foot on the new floor to be testing. Sounds like you are being good parents/staff.

  2. Harvard's Geoffrey Chaucer Website: How To Read Chaucer [Click] This seems to be just the ticket for me. I am thrown for a bit of a loop when I encounter the letter “thorn” in place of “th“ since it can be pronounced (the linguistic terms are unfamiliar to me) either softly as in “thin” or hard as in “there,” but I expect that modern English will be a good guide to that—I just have to become familiar with the old spelling. Old English will be more of a challenge since it is a largely inflected language like Latin or German; word order and sequence are therefore of little if any importance. Santa Claus will deliver a good used copy of “The Riverside Chaucer” for me.

    1. The Riverside Chaucer is indispensable. If you're interested in Old English, you might want to look for Bright's A Guide to Old English They're up to the eighth edition I see, but an older edition would probably work just fine. Don't remember what was assigned in my introductory Old English class a million years ago, but I did not get it at all until stumbling upon Bright. It's an excellent book.

    2. Santa is bringing me a copy of "A Guide to Old English" by Bruce Mitchell, but I will ask him to see if he has a copy of Bright; thank you.

    3. I think you must have meant the “A Guide to Old English” by Bruce Mitchell, which I had ordered via alibris.com on the strength of a person waving it around on a video, plus the number and quality of ratings on Amazon. Thank you for the additional review.

While rooting around just now, I discovered the following tome, which certainly has a catchy title: Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village [Click]

    5. Think so. When I did a quick google search for Bright's Old English, that's what came up. If memory serves (and it's pretty shaky these days) the original Bright published his Guide in, like, the 1920s or '30s. Chances are, if I were to find my copy, the actual author would be listed as someone else, maybe even Mitchel. *shrug*

  4. I was under the impression that the practice of medicine was (at least in theory) limited to licensed physicians. Put me down as a Pollyanna, I guess.

  5. Some time this afternoon I need to replace some fluorescent light bulbs, but those are a two-person job, and my sweetie is trying to get in a nap--for some reason she didn't sleep well last night.

    2. It is much easier with a second person to help, one on the ladder and one on the floor to accept the removed bulbs and hand up the new ones.
